Default Ubi SH5 packaging says Win7 supported-Any new ideas?

Hi folks,

Was happily playing SH5 on a WinXP/MCE system, as well as SH3 & 4 previously. Retail packaging on SH5 says game supported on Windows 7 OS. Okay. Good to go for upgrade, right?

Upgraded machine (i7-930, Win7-64bit, 470GTX (drivers 266.58 aka newest), 6GB RAM, latest DirectX updates.

Previous SH5 install didn't work. Reinstalled SH5 to continue happy hunting in the north atlantic. Loaded to own folder in C: 32 bit drive.

When installing to include automatic upgrade to 1.2 (and subsequent re-re-re-installing) it then says insufficient RAM, and video driver too old.

When starting new campaign I get black screen with my buddy saying "returning to course Captain..." in the background and then game crashes to desktop.

Have tried "3GB switch" selected on & off, and WinXP SP2 and WinME compatibility modes to no effect. No mods yet, just retail game.

I've tried everything I can think of short of registry mod, and don't have much faith there. Out of ideas. Anyone? Anyone?

Thanks in advance for ANY new ideas you may have. My appologies to those who have already posted potential solutions, but nothing I've read here seems to work for me.

It sounds to me like the root of your problem was doing an inplace upgrade of WinXP/MCE to Win7 (x64) as opposed to a clean/new install of Win7.

Have you got a 2nd hard disk to test a clean install on?

running it with win 7 64 bit here with no problems. just installed it to its own folder, no compatibility mode.

upgrade v. clean instal may be an issue, especially since I understand SH5 did not run on your XP instal?

Concur best to do clean OS installs. The upgrading of an older OS is sketchy and I stopped that practice many versions ago!

windows 7 is NOT compatable to upgrade from xp (it says so right on the box)

you have to reformat the drive its on and do a clean fresh install

windows 7 has no issues with where you load things and will be fine to use all the default loading places software is sset up for, where needed win7 will automaticly create special folders and install locations. (its pretty much a "automaticly do it all for you" OS)

win7 64bit with 4GB ram and 460 GTX here and sh5 installed by simply letting it install normally (you will need to install DX9.0c AND the DX stuff that comes with the game

EDIT: to clarify, IIRC you can upgrade from XP or ME to Vista and you can go from a non upgrade version of Vista to Win7 but you CANT upgrade from XP or ME to Vista and then go from an upgraded version of Vista to Win7

Make sure that the Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable 9.0.30729.4974 are not installed on your system, check it via control panel -> programs and features (any version below .4974 is ok )

If installed, deinstall the Redistributable 9.0.30729.4974 and install the ones from the SH5 DVD(installer: \Support\VCRedist\vcredist_x86.exe)

Hmmm... Hearing that it works on your Win7 installs actually makes me less happy... Means I got a glitch somewhere.

My bad for not including the fact my install was a "clean" on a reformatted drive. I just played HD musical chairs with existing folders/back-ups before the rebuild.

I did try the install to seperate folder, and the driver roll-back to oldest one on nVidia site, obviously with no effect. I'll try that DX redistributable suggestion next.

Thanks to ALL for your inputs! At least I know it CAN be done at some point so I'll continue on. (Great forum)

Half day later.....

Tried C++ redistributable re-install, newest & oldest nVidia driver (266. & 197.), DirectX 9.0c update, as very first program on a new Win7 install. Still crashes CTD at begining of campaign just past cut scenes.

The fact that others are getting a functioning product under Win7 is somewhat frustrating.

Out of ideas.

Thanks. Did do a clean install, checked disc, ran defrag, then loaded SH5 as very first program, to avoid any conflicts. No effect. Then tried another clean install and set SH5 as own folder on C:, still no improvement.

Installing SH5 I typically get the SH5 "hardware checker page" or whatever they call it and it still gives a caution for only 2GB of RAM eventhough I have 6GB physical and 3GB switch turned on, and second "incompatible" for video driver being too old "168(?) or better is required" eventhough I'm using 197 which is oldest nVidia archives. Did try Win7 install disc default video drivers, but that wouldn't even start cut scenes.

I think I've spent more time trying to fix it than I did playing when it was running under XP/MCE.

About time to give up and call my $60 a learning experience. Thanks for all the help folks.

that right there should clue you into a memory problem. Yes, you might have 6GB physical hardware wise but I don't think it's 'working'. What happens when you check start-->Control panel-->System? What does it say for Installed Memory (RAM)? I suspect it's going to tell you 2GB. If it does you have something wrong with either your mobo or one/some of the memory sticks.

you can download memtest > HERE, which runs tests and will tell you if you have a problem with your ram. It is a free program and would be a good starting point - it wont be the fact that your using win 7, i run sh5 on win 7 64bit without the issues you have
