Default What the heck is happening in Hungary?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...n-constitution

Quote:
What is the result? Fidesz's nationalist vision has potentially been enshrined forever: even if the party loses future elections, its appointees will keep exercising power, while the party itself will in all likelihood retain considerable influence, since no other political grouping is likely to muster a two-thirds majority. Any potential leftwing government will be highly constrained; its budget could be vetoed by the (Fidesz-staffed) budgetary council, upon which the (Fidesz-appointed) president can dissolve parliament.
They overthrew one authoritarian regime 20 years ago, why on earth would they start another?

Then it's only a matter of time before they become filthy corrupt and filthy rich.

And in time degraded into petty thugs, thieves, rapists, torturers and murderers.

To be honest I can see cycles of life in the political and historical events. Death resets everything yes but unfortunately aside from sweeping the rotten old apples, mankind has the tendency to be ignorant stupid fool and repeat what had been corrected to be corrected all over again and so on.

You should read this article from the EUObserver. It is a long beast, in comparison to the rest on the site, but it gives a good overview of the status of democracy today in Hungary. Plus if you search for it, you'll find even more disturbing reports from Easter time and the "mass" evacuation of the Rome people from villages to somewhere "safe".

I'm going to refrain from expressing an opinion on Hungary, as I really haven't read enough to consider myself 'informed.'

That being said, taken at face value, the word "safe" in this quote sounds quite chilling...
