Not to mention the TSA's wretched reputation for rummaging through passenger luggage looking for the best goodies to steal. Ooo, lookie. A free ipod.

Strange how the solution we came up with for security from terrorism, ends up being almost being a form of terrorism itself.

Let'S not exaggerate it. Crime and terrorism are two different things.

On the other hand, freedom and security are natural antagonists, two poles on a scale with just one slider. The art lies in finding a setting that balances both best for most occasions. But you cannot have both maxed out.

It does seem kinda weird. One would think that a terrorist would want to keep a low profile through security and not call attention to themselves by making complaints.

Excellent point. However, the TSA doesn't think that way. It's a government agency, and it does exactly what government agencies are designed to do; perform a task whilst abiding by all regulations, paying inflated wages for largely unskilled work, and not discriminating against prospective employees or customers (in this case passengers) no matter what. In other words, it does very little. Expensively.

We can sit here and point out all the ways the TSA does things wrong 'till the cows come home, but without changing the system and the system that put it in place, we're just going to get the same results.

My first thought would be to look around the world for examples of security measures that work. There are about two-hundred countries in this world and tens of thousands of companies that deal with security interests every day. I refuse to believe that not a single one of them has developed a better approach than that of the TSA. Why not find one and copy it? Better yet, why not remove the TSA and the Department of Homeland Security altogether? Just give the whole business over to private companies and let the airports and other private ports of entry pay them, but with the legislative provision that if they mess up even once, it comes out of their pay or results in a revocation of their license. Not the most elegant approach, but at least its better than what we have now.

So the answer is to gush how awesome TSA is while you're standing in line. You'll breeze right on through.

As much as I may disagree with some of the policies of the TSA, I have to recognize that they are in a very difficult position.

They are supposed to catch bad guys, but it is very hard to tell who is a bad guy.

The policies that they are forced to abide by hinder this.

The public is difficult to deal with but if something bad happens, like a terrorist using children, they are the first to complain about "why didn't TSA search children?" and call for a witchhunt.

A friend of mine was one of the first batch of TSA screeners. Not only are they not "over paid" for the first 6 months they were not paid at all (and were not given back pay). But she still did her job.

TSA is supposed to, somehow, not inconvenience innocent passengers but somehow know who the bad guy is who is trying to hide. Think you can do that?

Yeah, TSA does a lot wrong. But they are doing the best they can while working in an uncooperative environment where everything they do is scrutinized. And if anyone knows how to do "Racial Profiling" in America with over 2,000,000 passengers per DAY, I am sure DHS would be interested. In my opinion, Racial Profiling would cause more problems and result in more people getting pissed.

Can TSA be fixed? I think so and it is being fixed. Their policies are being reworked all the time. I am willing to cut them some slack. TSA has the best of intentions and is trying to do goodly things. Are they perfect? Nope

I can handle a little inconvenience. I wear my big boy pants when I fly.
