Default Attack Disk uses

Hey all.

So, the OLC mod comes with something called an "attack disk". With it, you can figure out a target's heading, and the true bearing to the target. Hugely useful to a newb like me.

I'm wondering, is there anything else it can do? And if there is, how?

Yes, it has many functions..

If you are so inclined you can use it to work out a torpedo fire solution without having the TDC do it for you. Now that's real manual targeting!

But I couldn't tell you how, as I only use it for true bearing and target heading.

Using it for anything else just over complicates Silent Hunter, although I can understand people using it in a more advanced way just for the fun of it, and perhaps to simulate a TDC failure.

I belive the attack disc was originally incorperated into the U-Jagd Tools mod. If you download it, you'll get a manual that'll teach you some of the more advanced attack disc functions.

Also there are plenty of attack disc threads on this forum. Some people here make their own out of cardboard.

The Attackdisk does, but what OLC implemented was only one side of the disk, the side that allows you to do course/true vs relative bearing/AOB calculations. Unfortunately no time/distance/speed or intercept calculations. You would need the other side for that. The Magui mod had that one implemented for sure, and is based on the OLC mod.

Oh no! You had to go and tell me that yet another mod existed. I looked it up and I can't decide if I like it better than what I'm using (GWX + OLC Gold Mk II + ACM w/ Lite Map). I can't tell from its thread whether it's for GWX, and whether it can just go over OLC like ACM can. (So many acronyms!! )

What do you guys think is better for someone like me, a newb teaching himself the hard way from the start, the setup I have, or this "magui" instead?

: (on topic) hey, the attack disk in that manual you linked me to has three spinney bits. Mine only has two. I want a third spinning thingy!

Hang on a minute! I do have the rear side of the attack disk!!

I'm not sure if it's from OLC or from the ACM Reloaded I put over OLC, but I noticed a little red wedge in the bottom right of the Observation periscope. I clicked it, and suddenly the view is filled with the attack disk. But it isn't the attack disk with the two clear sliders, no. This one has what looked to me like a circular slide rule.

I brought up the attack disk manual you linked, and sure enough it matches perfectly with the reverse side of the attack disk.

Time for more learnin' for me!

If you feel like getting creative you can always fabricate yourself a handheld version to play with:

I just use it so my boat appeareson the navmap again. It also has a nicer AOB finder on the attack periscope and a few other little things. It's just a small change from OLC, nothing drastic. A small DL, too.

I just looked up the old, original ACM, and the slide rule was added to that. This version, ACM Reloaded, is more like an adjustment of OLC to add the things in original ACM to it. The guy who made it, one "Karamazovnew" didn't mention that he put in the slide rule, but I'm glad it's there.

I've run into that problem too-there are quite a few excellent GUI mods out there and it is hard to choose. It seems every time I settled on one and said "This is the one!", one of our talented modders would come out with another one. I've tried OLC, magui, ACM. All are excellent.

One thing I've found is all have their good points and bad points. If I had the time and a little more modding knowledge(ok...a lot more knowledge ), I'd take the parts I like of all the GUI mods and make my own.

The best thing to do is just play around with all of them and see which one fits you best.

As far as the best one to use when learning-I assume you mean learning manual targeting-I'm not sure. When learning, simpler might be best until you get more experience and get the basics down.
I cut my manual targeting teeth on ACM with map contacts turned on, if that is any help.

I'm currently using this one though:

It is a more visual type mod-you rely more on the eye to determine range and AOB. With practice, it becomes fairly easy within the limitations of the game and a 2D screen.

I made a handheld whiz wheel a while ago and use it quite a bit with SH3 and even when I play SH4(more for courses, AOB's and such).

Well, to easily learn manual TDC all you really need in my opinion is to be able to see the TDC dials next to your periscope view. If you have this then you are good to go and anything else you get with a gui mod like scope wheels, fancy plotting tools, slide rules, and more useful periscope markings is just a bonus.

I'd suggest to just have some fun and start playing the game before you worry about chopping and changing mods. OLC/ACM is as good a start as any gui, and once you are familiar with the ins and outs of plotting and manual TDC then you'll have a clearer idea of what you'll want out of a gui mod if you feel like a change.

Oh, it's not fair. I like all the charts and things in that one, Sharkbit, but I like the AOB finder ring and attack wheel that's in my current setup.

I wish I knew how to mod, so I could just take all the bits I like from all the different GUIs and make my own. For instance, the way I have it now the navmap only has one of the clear plastic(?) draggable tools, while before there were several, it doesn't have the big pull-out compass, the chart of harbor defenses is gone, and the watch doesn't have the three speed gauges. I want all those things, but I also want everything it does have.

So I guess my problem is... I want it all. Is that so much to ask?
