Maryland Man Arrested for Allegedly Lying About Military Service

A Maryland man was arrested at his home for allegedly posing for years as a retired special forces colonel to enable his career lecturing law enforcement agencies and schools across the country.William G. Hillar, 66, faces a federal count of mail fraud for payment he received for lectures he gave at Monterey Institute of International Studies in California, according to court papers.

Hillar worked as a freelance lecturer at Monterey Institute of International Studies between 2005 to 2010, receiving a total of $32, 500 for the lectures, according to the Monterey County Herald. He taught counterterrorism and human trafficking.Students at the school raised questions about Hillar’s claims of serving in the special forces, which lead to the school to request documentation from Hillar, according to a statement from the school.
Hillar did not respond to the request, so the school conducted an investigation. He allegedly claimed to hold a Doctorate from the University of Oregon, but the school found that he never received the degree.

An investigation orchestrated by the FBI goes further, revealing inconsistencies in some of Hillar’s claims of military service.

Seems like I always hear stories about people being special forces. My fiancee met someone who claims their husband is a seal. I saw some jackoff in some book made for my 10 year high school reunion (which i didn't attend), who went out of his way to point out he was special forces. When i was stationed at my last duty base while active duty, the GS11 in charge of the shop claimed up and down he was an ex seal. (All the crap he put on his walls that you can buy at any surplus store didn't convince me).

Point is, there's a ton of people out there who try and paint themselves as military bad ass's. The INSTANT i hear that soandsoa is seal/special forces/ green beret/ranger, the first thing i say is, "Uh huh. Suuurree...", or " yeah right".

edit:

I only met ONE guy who was genuinley all that and a bag of chips. I worked with the guy at my last base. He was a Ranger in vietnam, and he didn't talk up a bunch of crap. He didn't need to. Working with him (He was a GS worker in base maintanence), you could tell there was something different about him that was engrained in his inner character. You can't fake that.

I didn't find out what he did in the service until a long time friend of his told me. I got along pretty good with him. When I PCS'ed out, I gave him my extra pair of OD green jungle boots that was issued to me when i went to central america. (they were his size) He thanked me profusely, and remarked they were just like the ones he wore. That meant alot to me since i had just come back from overseas and didn't quite fit in with the lazy spoiled princesses that was my duty section.

Perhaps what so he started small and then grew the sh!t and he lost control, but my saying is, as long as you're honest, you do not have to remember what you have said.

An honest man never has to worry about getting caught.

The guys who do it never talk about it. The guys who talk about it could never do it.

This, not necessarily. It depends on who is talking to who.

It is like those jerks who wear the MoH when they were not awarded it. Don't they realize that the people who are award the MoH write down the names?

Glad this jerk was caught.

They caught a guy here in Australia not long ago, who claimed to be a WW2 vet who worked behind enemy lines, was captured, tortured and survived Japanese death camps. He was uncovered when a historian heard a speach he had made and knew that he making it up. He was jailed for 6 years and told to pay back all the money ha had recieved from Vet Affairs.

There wasn't much public support for him....
