Default Where do I look to see what version of the Type VII I have?

I just got command of a new version of the Type VII but I didn't pay attention to what it is. Is there a way to look in-game and see? I thought maybe in system status where it shows the diagrams of all the components, but I don't see it there.

Not that i know of. In SH3 you at least knew which sub you commanded.

I usually look at the conning tower to inform myself which type it is. For example an VIIA has a more slimmer conning tower and no flaggstaff. Whereas VIIB has a more stocky type. The difference between VIIB and VIIC is a tough nut to crack but are visually seen. VIIC´s conning tower is a bit slimmer and has a slight twistier edge.

Obviously, VIIC/41 has a bigger Wintergarden and two flak guns so not that hard.

Depends also in which phase you are in the game. In the beginning it is a VIIA. Check also the subs name. The higher the name the "better" sub.

point your cursor over your sub on the map - the text with the type of your submarine will appear

Oh crap, I'm gonna kick myself if it's that simple!

I thought I already tried that . . . could a mod like TDW's UI have an effect? I'll try it tonight and report back. And kick myself.

if you go to the sub pen and check upgrads (particularly conning tower upgrades) it'll tell you what type of conning tower/sub you're using, i.e. type vii-b flake conning tower type 2

Looks like I'm in the VII C as determined by homsikpanda's method. Thanks, guys!
