Default Stalker in Detroit

This picture series strongly reminded me of the scenery and mood in the great Tarkovski movie "Stalker":

Hmm, we certainly know what the Stalker game franchise was based on
And imdb give the movie a glowing review...
what's the film like?
Much action or more focus on character development etc?
It's a 1979 film, so a while back now.

It is kind of a chamber play between three people, and it is no action movie, but a psycho-philosophical reflection about the ways of people searching meaning in life. Slow pace, many long lasting steady shots. It has an extremely tense atmosphere and scenery. One of the most impressive movies I have ever seen in all my life, with images I have never forgotten. Made in the Soviet era. No popcorn movie, and in fact quite existentialistic, some may even say: depressing, at least disillusioning. Highly recommended.

I also recommend the movie "Solaris" by the same director. It was redone by Soderbergh and Clooney some years ago, but while being a good movie taken for itself, the redone film lacks the complexity and philosophical depth of the original. Watch the Tarkovski orginal. It is the better one. I also do not forgive Soderbergh that he turned the somewhat pessimistic ending of Tarkovski's original into a somewhat candy-sweet, typical Hollywood happy ending.

Oh that heavy depth of that Russian soul!

I will give that a go as well, the original that is, i cannot stomach G Clooney , in any film for that matter.

Beide Filme sind exzellente Wahl, aber wie schon angedeutet: schwere Kost. "Unterhaltung" ist was anderes. Wer Schwarzenegger-Brachialitis sehen will, sollte nicht ins Ballet gehen. Nicht daß ich nicht auch Schwarzenegger gerne sehe, ich kann mich glänzend mit seinen Filmen amüsieren. Ist nur eben ganz was anderes.

Stalker was good, but Tarkovski's Solaris is a sure fire cure for insomnia - I have yet to actually stay awake the 3 times I've tried to watch it. 2001 is a an action-packed summer blockbuster in comparison (and also much better).

Funny, I always thought the opposite. I never really liked 2001, and I love Stalker to death - it's a movie I watch maybe 4 times a year, and find something new in every time. However Tarkovsky is definitely not a light watching and not for everyone. He dwells on detail and atmosphere, and doesn't explain very much - it's up to the viewer to pick out the detail and think over his movies. They never bored me for that reason, because for all their slowness there is always something to ponder in them.

Let everything that's been planned come true. Let them believe. And let them have a laugh at their passions. Because what they call passion actually is not some emotional energy, but just the friction between their souls and the outside world. And most important, let them believe in themselves. Let them be helpless like children, because weakness is a great thing, and strength is nothing. When a man is just born, he is weak and flexible. When he dies, he is hard and insensitive. When a tree is growing, it's tender and pliant. But when it's dry and hard, it dies. Hardness and strength are death's companions. Pliancy and weakness are expressions of the freshness of being. Because what has hardened will never win.

Stalker.
