Venting: My ISP

Since January 1st 2011 I downgraded my internet subscription to 1Mbps from 2Mbps which was costing a little less than US$42.00(with tax). Now I'm paying US$25.00 (inc tax) for a 1Mbps service.

To my dismay my internet is capped from time to time to 0.69Mbps for some reasons. Local server speed test would show that from time to time my speed was capped to 0.69Mbps.

This is totally unacceptable to me since at that speed streaming video becomes a pain so I called the ISP asking about it and they promised to forward the problem to the technical department and meanwhile I got my 1Mbps speed back.

Today the capping to 0.69Mbps happened again and called the ISP again. The service representative told me that the technical dept had tried to call me but the call went unanswered(which was a lie as far as I know). But what surprised me was that she said I had been running my internet UNCAPPED at 7Mbps!!!!!!

Well I'm running Windows 7 with network monitoring gadget that showed that I had been getting a little less than 1Mbps max speed throughout the day so I said she must be wrong but she insisted that the system indicated I had been enjoying 7Mbps speed(I couldn't even stream 2 youtube low res video at the same time so how could I be enjoying 7Mbps speed and the gadget clearly showed 124kB/s max throughout the day)!!!!!! I went into a bit of arguing with her because that was untrue! She finally recommended me to pull the modem power cord for an hour which I did and now the speed is back at 1Mbps.

Now I don't mind being capped but the ISP must inform its customers that they are going to cap speed below subscription level when usage exceeded certain quota. I asked whether the ISP practiced this and she said they were not capping basing on quota and she said I had been running uncapped at 7Mbps!

If this continues I might as well change internet provider. I don't pay to get upset and lied to.


Anyway I just need to vent.
I'm sorry I don't mean to treat subsim as a trash bin.
