Default Japanese escorts radar

Hello all!
Using TMO2.0 - RunSilent Run Deep - July 1942

Anyway, I'm off Attu an Kiska, intercepting japanese ressuply convoys.
I'm doing the around and out maneuver to submerge and intercept the convoy before they can see.
So, it's at night, with moon, but still very dark. I'm tracking the merchant plus destroyer convoy with radar for a long time and from a long distance. At 10 kilometers I turn off radar and start tracking manually. I make my maneuver so that I can submerge at a distance of 6000 yards from the convoy.
However, As I get to 9000 yards from the convoy, the destroyer sees me and starts shooting. All my interecption plans go out the window. So, what is happening? Is the destroyer detecting me because my somewhat abusive use of radar? Or do they have radar of their own, so early out in the war? Or are they seeing me, even at night (even though there's moon)?
