I am playing SHIII with GWX 3.0 for ages. I have only sunk one Essex class US carrier. Recently I managed to sneak in NY harbor (June 1942) but I found no big warships. (There were though a lot of juicy merchant targets large troop ship , ceramic type ocean liner and liberty cargos)
WHERE ARE THOSE BIG US WARSHIPS? Do I need to raid Norfolk? Thank you! |

You'll have better luck looking for them at sea than in harbors, on convoy escort (particularly in arctic waters), as well as a few specific operations (like D-Day). You might have some luck with ships transiting along the US coast, as many were built and repaired in eastern shipyards (most notably New York and Philadelphia), but once there they'd be spending most of their time docked. Otherwise the bases aren't the smartest thing to go for. Norfolk is probably a decent bet, being the main base for the Atlantic fleet, but I'm not sure what there is in the game.

Another suggestion: if you time things right, you can probably bag US capital ships supporting Operation Torch (off Morocco) and various subsequent Mediterranean landings.

Trying to answer your question without spoiling it for others is difficult but I'll give you a few tips:
Check out Boston during Feb 42 for the CA Tuscaloosa and New York between March and May 42 for the New Orleans Class Quincy and Norfolk for some escorts and a Bogue carrier. |

I can only imagine raiding a US harbor is suicidal at best.

You give up every tactical advantage to sink sitting ducks you will find on the high seas anyway.

I'll put it this way, harbor raiding is a lot more doable in game than it was in real life. That would particularly apply to a lot of the US fleet bases like Norfolk; it's not quite accurate in the game. Any notable ships would be anchored well inside Hampton Roads there; and that's miles and miles of very shallow water with only one entrance and exit that is easily blockaded. Scapa Flow at least had multiple entrances going for it... Nay, at Norfolk that's in fact two single exits you'd have to negotiate - one into Chesapeake Bay, and one into Hampton Roads, and then after causing the trouble get out of both alive. In real life, odds are you'd simply get bottled up in Chesapeake Bay. Sadly the game's AI doesn't think strategically. Even if you get detected and attacked, it will eventually let you go. And an attack on a major base won't rouse any more of a response than an average attack on a ship somewhere near the coast.
Most US bases on the East Coast enjoy sheltered anchorage that's well away from deep water and has single access channels that can easily be swept for mines and netted off from subs. A sub wouldn't really stand a chance there. If we're talking game on the other hand, if you want the easiest US port to raid - Key West! You never even have to leave deep water to be able to get good shots on the ships there. Not major warships, of course, but you can net some light stuff and good merchant traffic there. |

It more than obvious that I agree with you all.
In fact , raiding Norfolk was tottaly unrealistic but fun nevertheless. All DDs that were stationed there didn't move an inch. They did not even used their sonars. Sole defence was an armed tugboat and an Elco TB. There is no point doing it besides the fun! |

Well then, I might try it.
It's currently 1939 in my campaign. If I time it right, I can be in Norfolk right before hostilities start. As in hours before. Then I go wild.
