Default Torpedo spread/Mines

I asked this First question offhand in another post and promptly lost it. so... I am going to start this post with several questions. To recap, I am playing stock w' a few simple sound mods and fixs. Stock 1.4.
Q; I am playing auto-targeting. Can I still set up the TDC to spread the salvo? If I can, What are some good starting sets for spreads. EX; Center to Left, or Right?
Q2; Has anyone ever hit mines. There were many areas that were heavily mined as you know but I don't know if anyone has reported hitting one in the game.
Q3; Ships or personnel morale... How or when is ship's morale affected if ever. I know health is affected by personnel being wounded but morale.
OK. I'll throw these out there, 'cause I've been wondering...

I hit a mine a couple of days ago in the English channel while running close to the French coast. I suffered some damage which the crew was able to repair.

Yes you can set the spread angle, depth, etc for each individual torpedo. The auto-targetting (correct me if I'm wrong anyone) just handles range, AOB and speed. Everything else can be set by the Captain or kept at the default settings.

I too have hit mines before. It's usually a nasty surprise when I'm cruising along submerged with no contacts anywhere around and deep water beneath the keel.

As far as morale goes, I'd say that it would affect things like reload time, repair time and how quickly contacts are detected and identified. I'm not too sure about the specifics though and will defer to the experts among us!

Best advice for shooting a spread with fleetboats is this:Place crosshairs over the area of the ship and fire, then move to next. You are on auto target so its simple.....say you have a mid sized freighter and will fire 3 torpedos.Place crosshairs over the middle of target and fire one torpedo, then place one on the forward mast, then the aft mast, you have a spread that should hit as aimed, esp on auto target. This is how many skippers in US subs did it during the war.Better than using the stupid spread knob.Pretty simple in auto target.

Mines are rare esp in stock game.Mods like TMO RSRD add some decent minefields in certain areas, you can hit them.I've hit one before and it caused catastrophic damage, lost my boat. Some say they have survived, I think it depends on where it detonates at on your sub and how close etc.In RL a mine hit your sub it was all over, in the game it did me that way but apparently it depends.

I've noticed morale depends on things such as how long crew is at GQ, if you leave them at GQ formore than 6 hours or so they can stay sharp but when you secure from GQ they are wiped. This affects health and morale.I've found if I am sinking ships morale stays high, esp if they get rested after.

I came out of T/C once and there was a mine, about three feet from my hull...that was the closest I've come (that I know of).

Absolutely, I understand this. The reason I want to try and use the spread setting is because I lock the crosshairs on my main target. This is because it frees up both my hands for using shortcut commands and the fact that when I aim without being locked, by the time the torpedo leaves the tube, my aim gets fouled up for one reason or another. Maybe I will try the unlocked approach again but I am sinking many more ships with aim locked.
As far as morale goes, I was just wondering because I've never seen the morale change at all. So I was wondering what would have to happen to make the crew morale change from good to bad or Mutiny or whatever.
Thanks for the reply, I'll definitely try the unlocked aim again. Maybe now that I've been playing awhile, I can aim at certain portions of the ship.

I have my "F" key programmed to fire torpedos. I use the mouse to move the crosshair and F to fire. The moment the triangle indicator turns green at the nose of the target as it comes into range, pick your destinations & fire.

Torpedos fire pretty much instantly if your outer doors are opene.Remember to hit "Q" and open your torpedo tubes before firing. Then aim and fire. You'll get good results
