Swordfish

Are Swordfish always carrier-based in GWX?

A flight of them flew at me between Bergen and Lerwick, which seemed a bit far for them. However, a quick check of the net indicates they would have had the range to attack me from Britain (though barely).

I know if they are from a carrier, the carrier could be 300-400km away, easily, but just wondering if the Swordfish is proof positive of a carrier out there or not.

Default Near is relative

A fully laden Swordfish had about 260km operational radius, if you use the 1/3 out, 1/3 on station, 1/3 back in ratio. In real life.

But in the game, I would not reckon they spawn from that far away.

My better question, then, is.

1) Do they always spawn from carriers?

2) How far away can they spawn?

Default Take a bearing

I'd be tempted to take a bearing on the reciprocal of their approach and go find me a big fat carrier.

The chance is worth a look.

1) I believe so but not 100% certain.

2) Within the limit of their operational radius....check the figures in the museum for example.

Sound advice.

My feeling is this is the game's way of telling you there is a carrier near you. You would almost always get an RWR warning if you are that late in the war that you have one.

It seems likely a carrier was present. SH X doesn't seem like a series where the AI has been given certain advantages to provide an added challenge, like randomly spawning craft or extended range.

And I think I encountered a carrier's aircraft as well when I was between Scotland and Norway, being closer to the Norwegian coast. A few separate flights of Torpedo Swordfish appeared near me, circled, and headed back in the same direction. Alas, my heading slightly south of their departing path did not reveal a carrier.
