Bubblehead mentioned how he hated all the single merchants in 44&45. I have to concur, I don't even mess with singles when I play except tankers.
I agree with him, you didn't see singles all over the ocean in 44 and 45, maybe some on the coast. I see RSRD has seperate "japmerchant" files for each year, along with another file "other merchants", these appear to be the singles. Anyone see any reason why the single japmerchant and other merchants files can't be removed? I removed 41 single merchant just to try and never saw a single, convoys were fine. The only issue I saw was those rare contact reports showing a single slow ship. I will sink tankers, but I see a seperate file for those. |

Removing traffic from RSRD? Now there's a first. Usually the complaint is RSRD has too little traffic.

lol I used to be one of them but once I learned the shipping lanes it's all fine esp where convoys are concerned.Although certain time periods are dry, its realistic and fun. I suggested to Armistead that should do away with lone merchants/tankers in later war, with the exception of small coastal freighters such as Taihosan Maru and Kasagisan Maru or the tanker like Haruna Maru(even small tankers became too important to let go alone) along the coast and on "local runs" Starting around March 1944 should see barely any singles other than small merchants and completely eliminate UNESCORTED singles as of 1 June 1944.Anything else not in a convoy should have some type of escort. Japanese doctrine changed after suffering severe losses in Feb 1944 to US submarines, just didnt see an important ship(for most part) unescorted after that.A mid sized freighter moving down coast from Tokyo to say Kii Suido would be near the coast and have several small escorts like the Cha-1 subchaser or at the very least a patrol plane assigned as escort.Or one big ship may have a DD or DE with a couple small escorts or alone but point is, they were escorted.Just took easy to rack up tonnage in 44 and 45 from singles, they look very out of place. I once assigned nearly every single in TMO an escort or two and it made singles not such "easy pickns" my install was fouled up due to mod soup and I lost it.I no longer have the time to do this and have been away can change things in RSRD without fouling it up, was always under the impression you could not do any work with the ME in RSRD. RSRD esp with sonar and radar patches put out, along with TMO is pretty much perfect, just needs some tweaking. |

The IJN did not have the resources to escort every lone merchant ship. While convoys increased, not all ships were convoyed.

Really, I don't know that it matters. I know it's not reality to ignore ships, but I usually let singles go by as I'm headed for a honey hole. I wouldn't mind pulling them out for 44 and 45. The tankers have a seperate file, that'a all I would want anyway.
So far haven't found any singles after two patrols, so seems to work. If Peabody comes by, thanks for all your help. Got triggers working great now that you explained it to me in simple logic. You can make those patrols a lot more exciting than just go here, Last edited by Armistead; 10-21-10 at 01:41 AM. |

True but in later war they waited to make their run until could form convoys or they found escorts, even if it was just something like the cha-1 and a floatplane or a gunboat with sonar...barely any worthwhile ships were allowed to make a risky transit alone. Some were given their own sonar(which in the game they have passive sonar, cant get close for an approach before they start zigging, their ears are a little too good but found it easy to shoot them that way, just have to get close and wait for the right angle. Thinking of O Kanes "Clear the Bridge" in the Tang's June/July 1944 patrol off Honshu I believe it was, they found plenty of ships making runs up and down the coast but they always had 2-4 small escorts and usually one plane protecting 1 decent sized merchant or tanker. This was almost a daily occurance. |

so you eliminated the singles? awseome.Next step is to create a new one but with coastal only with escort(s) Thinking I may do that if I get a chance, will have to explain to me how to put it in so it shows up in campaign. |

I like Bubblehead's idea of replacing the large number of singles with coastals + escorts. Having said that, even late in the war single ships were occasionally encountered - so I'd suggest that you don't eliminate all unescorted singles, just drastically reduce their numbers.
