Default Type XXI Sonar question

I know the type XXI has a option when you select the hydrophone/sonar operator then select sonar to get a range to target, but no matter what I try when I select the option it always says no target selected. I am using GWX with OLC's MkIId GUI. I use manual targeting so it would be great if I can get an extra confirmation on range. I know historically the type XXI could get a firing solution just using the sonar. Does anyone know the proper way to use the sonar or at least know how to get range to contact using the option I described? Please clue me in or send me to the thread if this has been covered before. Thanks.

I am talking from memory, but I think that you need to have a target lock in the periscope! The type XXI sonar is not well mod in the game, but there are several tutorials for get a solution only using the hidrophones/sonar. In the other hand, sonar pings from the type XXI are detectable by destroyers, if I am not mistaken!

I tried having a target locked in the periscope, no dice. Unless I'm doing it wrong(this is quite possible). I guess I'll have to do some searching through some tutorials. Thanks for the reply.

I think you need your hydrophones operator following a contact first, then ask him for range.

Yep, that'll do it. Click your sonar officer, click "follow nearest warship" or "follow nearest ship" (whichever it is your trying to lock on to). Then try to get the distance, that works for me, unless its something else im doing that making it work.

You can also, go to the radio room, right-click the sonar guy, which will put you in his place. Then turn the hydrophones to the target your trying to get the distance on, and click the little "sende" button next to the hydrophone wheel. Last time I tried this, it didnt work for GWX, but it could have been the boat I was on...
