North Korea troops 'fire into South Korea'

North and South Korean troops have exchanged fire across the border, South Korean officials say.

North Korea fired two rounds towards a frontline unit and South Korean soldiers returned fire three times.

The shooting occurred in Hwacheon, some 90km (56 miles) north-east of the South's capital, Seoul, according to reports from South Korea's YTN TV.

If the war does start, could we have a gambling thread?
Please, please, please?

Gambling on this sort of war is useless, everybody would bet on one side if they want to win.

Either way, this isn't too extraordinary, so there's no special reason why a war should start.

EDIT: Oh, and technically the last war is still on, so there won't be any need for starting a new war.

Wonder if the Chinese are probing in an attempt to exploit a perceived weakness. U.S. economy on the downside, deployments to Iran, Pakistan. Homeland security, border issues and rising violence in Mexico. Wanting to see the resolve of the U.S. and how willing it is to push back. They certainly would love to diminish U.S. influence in the Pacific.

Just keeps piling up doesn't

Or is this just par for course in Korea?

The Chinese will wage economic war and back that up with arms. NK is a puppet diversion to keep the west on edge.

Par for course. Seriously, if the axe murder incident and operation Paul Bunyan didn't rekindle the war, 5 pot shots certainly won't.

I read the article. They make demand, we say no. Still they go ahead and fire a shot. When an agreement is finally agreed upon their fearless leader can say it was on account of their military might that forced us to the table. The games we play.

But then again like I said things do seem to be piling up. Others are watching too and if they perceive U.S. weakness. It will be much harder for the U.S. to make friends and influence people in the Asian/Pacific region. It's no secret China wants the U.S. out of their neighborhood. If the U.S. cannot or will not respond sufficiently those others who are watching will be forced to find a new found respect for China. And liberty ports will be constrained to the western seaboard of the U.S.

Sooner or later war will break out again in Korea. I just believe it's not a question of if but when.

Let's see if this comes to eventuality give it some time . . .

If you don't think so you're implying it's okay for North Korea to develop and own nuclear arsenal and nuclear ballistic missiles. . . . .I would rather Iran have them than North Korea.

The only thing keeping the allies from starting war with North Korea is the hope that it will give up its nuclear arms ambition and the regime's peaceful collapse(which to me is very unlikely) and the number of casualties that would be suffered by both sides, a hope which wanes as time progresses as the risk factors are outweighed by urgency to stop North Korea from building their nuclear arsenal and the long term global instability and nuclear terrorism threat if that's allowed to continue. US and her allies will never ever tolerate a nuclear armed North Korea. Both side will get frustrated and then it would come to the question on who's going to provoke the other first. . .
and North Korea is the expert of provocation since it is the one side which is frustrated and desperate the most. Sooner or later one of their provocation will get out of tolerance limit and oblige the allies to respond with military action.

Heck North Korea nuclear issue is even more urgent than Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda issue.

I think that will only happen if the DPRK feels it has nothing left to lose. Then, maybe, it will go for broke. Open war would mean the end of North Korea.

What NK is best at, is a little game called brinkmanship. They've been doing it for years. If it was considered an art, the DPRK would be it's Rembrandt.

You mean the ROK and the US. I seriously doubt anyone in the US at any level, has any motivation to rekindle that war. It's much easier to rotate troops every year, and keep the policy of containment. No one in the US that I ever talked to wants to start shooting, infact, nobody on the US side of things even wants to be there. Amongst US forces in korea, theres a common/popular rumor that we're really there to keep the south from invading the north. Not the other way around. lol

edit:
On that note, the Korean Armed Forces are some tough sonsabitch's.
