Came back to SH after a few years. Found SH4, modded it up and am learning it and enjoying this sim very much.
I am wondering, the reviews aside...why SH5? What is the difference between it (assuming it was finished and released properly) and SH4 UBM with whatever great mod one uses? Is it graphics, sim construction? SH4 modded up seems to rather perfect. Regards, Royce |

Better graphics, captain's POV (you can walk around the whole boat from stem to stern, more crew animations, more dynamic campaign (if you cause trouble in one spot the enemy will beef up defenses and sent ships to hunt you). There's a lot more, but it was overly ambitious and needs a lot of fine-tuning before it's really ready. That said, there's a reasonable chance that when it is tuned up it will be far and away the best.
Still, for now I'm playing SH3 and SH4 at the same time.

I would stick with 4 until they get 5 fixed up.
1.5 with Operation Monsoon is a pretty good set up. They will no doubt get 5 looking and acting very good but it's going to take some time for all the patches and full mods. The modders have done an amazing job so far so I would expect that they will get the job done. Personally if it wasn't for mods all three of the games would have had a short life. Magic

For me SH5 needs a (free) campaign like SH3+4 and a bigger variety of targets.
SH5 is like my Ex-girlfriend : a beauty without heart and soul.

If it wasn't a constant connection that was required... maybe

If it didn't eliminate your legal fair use rights to copyrighted materials to sell, lend or give away your game and if you weren't victim to Ubi's willingness to continue the expense of running its three servers to cover the entire world, then it might be worth a look.
As it is now, with the DRM you have no right to lend, sell or give the game away and if they shut down the servers tomorrow, which they have full rights to do, your game is just wasted space on your hard drive plus a drink coaster with a hole in the middle. If SH4 is a great game, and it is, there is no reason to jump on the Titanic. Loud and obnoxious voices are screaming that she can't sink, but I assure you she will and probably sooner rather than later.

SH4 for your Pacific fix and SH3 with GWX for your U-boat fix. No solid reason to switch to SH5 yet IMHO plus I'm also one of those who completely disagrees with the DRM "permanent connection" stuff and won't get SH5 simply on principal alone.
IMHO Steam has it right (albeit not without some problems), it permits offline play along with the online aspect ergo you are not beholden to Steam should their systems crash or they simply go out of business. |

No I haven't and far from it. I'm really surprised I haven't been jumped on yet, so let me cover my posterior here. SH3 is also a great game and if you like it there is absolutely no reason to "progress" to SH5 either.

Thanks gents, that pretty much answers my question.
![]() It does seem that SH 5 POV and campaign could be interesting..but for a commercial enterprise to rely on the talents of modders and simmers to make their product remotely playable, well that's certainly ingenuous to say the least. Tomoose - >> SH4 for your Pacific fix and SH3 with GWX for your U-boat fix..<< Is there that much of a difference between SH3 GWX 3.0 vs SH4 UBM OM/OMEGU? I'm trying to get the best SubSim experience I can from SH. Regards, Royce Last edited by cptroyce; 05-19-10 at 10:15 PM. |

SH3 with GWX and SH4/Op Monsun/Omegu are very different and excellent experiences both. You'll appreciate the decision to do them both!

1) All the new mods that are still being made for SH3 and not SH4. The new harbors, the new interiors, the Canal locks, things like that. I know they're simply eye candy, but what a feast. I like the game to play right, but I like just cruising and looking at the sights as well, so that sort of thing appeals to me. 2) SH3 Commander. The adjustable values are important, but the career options, multitude of crew names keep me believing it's real. And the ship names. I live for having my targets get real names. And of course I've been devoting all my time to improving that, so I'm obviously biased. If SH4 had anything like the attention that's been paid to SH3, SH3 would be gathering dust on the shelf and I'd feel no guilt at all. We're hoping that in the long run SH5 will fill that spot. But for now, I play u-boats in both 3 and 4, and each time I switch I say "Yep. This one's the best." ![]()

To me it's a matter of atmosphere. SH3 has that authentic WWII flavor, somber colors, forboding atmosphere that reeks of danger. It is a claustrophobic, slightly intimidating effect that just feels right for the game.
SH4 is all bright, shiny and new, with intricate detail that in no way says that this can of men is fifty years ago. It's hard not to be optimistic when you're playing SH4. So the flavor of the two games is entirely different. Together, they make great compliments to each other. Appreciating one makes you appreciate the other more.
