It's a lumpy looking sucker, isn't it? Those paint and decal guides are sometimes the best schematics and drawings available of a sub, it's difficult to get that sort of thing easily. As a 3D modeler these layouts showing all sides are invaluable when you want to make a CG version.

Yes, thanks Bill for the image! (grin) Interesting how you could easily guess it was a Royal Navy sub just from the design. It resembles some of the WWII subs with the uneven deck line of the superstructure.
Looks like a bit of a pain to model. Hopefully I'll have a reason to some day!

That's not bad TLAM, given how poor most of the references have been. I hadn't realized the aft casing is so high, or that the sail has it's widest beam well aft of center. Pretty cool looking sub.

I wouldn't want to be forced to model it, thats for sure. That curious set of curves on the upper casing would need reworked so many times to get it looking right it would soon cease to be fun. I think you've done a pretty decnt job with your version, it is recognisable and thats pretty good going. Until I saw that decal sheet i didn't realise just how long the sail is and how tall the main casing is.

I can't help to wonder why the casing rises toward the stern. What might they have under there?

I think it is something to do with the reactor.
I'm sure someone can tell us. |
