Default Who said anything about retiring?!?

I'm sure this has happened to some of you before so allow me to just vent about my annoyance please.

It's early August 1943 and I just got back to Brisbane after a 2 month tour where I spent most of my time trying to sneak in and out of Rabaul harbor. Upon returning to base the game tells me something along the lines of "The navy is retiring your class of sub. You're at the front of the line for a new boat. Do you want to continue with the new boat?" My response was "No, I'd like to continue with my current boat", but apparently clicking NO tells the game "I'd rather retire then continue to fight for my country in a different boat" and I was retired.

Someone needs to word these warnings better so the choices are more clear when they're presented to you.

Or, you could have clicked "Yes, i want a shiny new toy!!!" And got the new boat, and then could go on an even longer patrol, sink more Jap tonnage, and win the war.....And i have declined many new boats myself, but was never retiered.

I liked my boat. Plus I had also declined a new boat my last time into port and wasn't forced to retire when I turned it down so I didn't expect it this time. I figured they'd let me keep my boat as long as I wanted.

That's why I always save just outside of the harbor, before ending my patrol.

It happened to me in late 44 with the Tarpon. It was the closest i have made it so far to completing the war. After that i started saving before going into port like WernherVonTrapp said, but i was soooo mad, i can understand your frustration.

Default Get a new boat, lose your radar

The other downside of taking a new boat is losing your surface search SJ radar!! I am on my second patrol in my new boat and have yet been able to re-equip my sub with the SJ radar that was available on my old boat.

Plenty of renown etc but for whatever reason I can't get the SJ radar.
Next campaign I certainly won't be taking a new boat no matter what.

It happened to me once, but I think it was the second refusal to take a new boat and same dock, Brisbane. I was trying to keep a Tambor through the war.

You have your port entry save, use it and try again or just take a new boat.

Excuse my ignorance and noobiness, but does the crew actually get better at their job as time goes by, I think I read that somewhere. Would you also end up with a different (inexperienced) crew if assigned a new boat?

Disclaimer: I've been a member of this forum for quite some time but have never acquired any skills so far in navigation or targetting, so I've not been doing very much subbing, although the interest is surfacing again

Earlier in the war I wanted to change home ports from Pearl to Brisbane and I was worried about losing my boat and crew. But as it turned out both transferred with me.

History tells us that certain classes of boats were retired during the war. This is part of the game. The availability of each class of sub is found in the UPC file. I have not found any date for when they start retiring subs, but it is probably coded so you can not start a patrol that would end past that date.
