S. Korea promises immediate response to N. Korea artillery

Any further North Korean artillery strikes south of the maritime boundary between North and South Korea will be met with shelling from the South, the South’s defense minister said Tuesday.

That's the toughest talk i've seen come out of the ROK in awhile. If the north fires more shells, and they land south for the northern line, that might be the match that relights that god damn tinder box. Both sides tend to play tit for tat. Kinda like a flame war between two people on a forum. Both sides trying to get the last word in. Still, i doubt anything will happen, but that's the strongest stance i've heard of.

SKorea: NKorea deploying troops, weapons,

near Pyongyang ahead of key national events.SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea is deploying troops, artillery and tanks near Pyongyang in apparent preparation for a massive military parade marking key national events later this year, South Korea said Tuesday.

The military buildup near the capital began in mid-July amid high tensions on the peninsula, South Korea's Defense Ministry said in a report submitted to a parliamentary committee.

"Preparation for a massive national event is under way" in North Korea and the move is presumably related to a key Workers' Party meeting in September and the 65th anniversary of the party's founding in October, it said.

Are you implying the Revered Leader cannot provide the required fuel?

It occurs to me that if all their hardware is as old as that Mig that crashed last week or two ago, their technological disadvantage is worse then i would have originally thought. They do have numbers, and motivation (they have nothing to lose and everything to gain), but I strongly suspect the DPRK's communications and radar infrastructure, would be eliminated virutally overnight, and current battle field technology would make short work of the tanks and planes. DPRK is using outdated soviet era hardware, no? Which leaves thousands of screaming southbound communist Hanguk's with AK's to deal with.

The thing isn't really the DPRK in a resumption of a shooting war. The thing is China and what they decide to do if war was to resume. Garunteed, china does not want US forces that close to its borders , AND it doesn't want thousands of DPRK refugee's flooding into its already overpopulated country.

The North Korean army has some modern equipment, but it's mainstay elements are updated or modified versions of fairly old Soviet systems. For example, the North Korean Air Force has a fair number of MiG-29s, but the majority of their fighters constitute different versions of the MiG-21. Similarly, while they have some modern home-designed tanks, most of their MBTs are both T-55s and both stock and heavily modified variants of the T-62.

I don't think the North Korean army has much of a chance to force a breakthrough of the DMZ; even if it did, it would have no chance of supplying exploiting forces.

He also designed the diesel engine.

North Korea is blessed with all natural resources in great abundance.

The people's technology can transform the blessed soil of the homeland in to fuel and munitions.

I agree but I wpuldn't want to see it put to the test.

A lot of damage can be caused before the reality of failure is noted/realised.

I think it is pretty clear that North Korea could not hold on to the land in the South. Eventually, they would be pushed back, or conquered. But much of South Korea would be destroyed. And that is not a good thing. The South wins the war, but lose everything.

I don't think there is any way of saving Seoul if the North starts the fighting war again. I think that is what scares South Korea the most.

Unless the DPRK crosses the DMZ in force with their Artillery Seoul is reasonably safe. The North only has 17 hardened sites within range of Seoul with about 95 known firing positions. They only have one model of gun capable of reaching Seoul.

SCUDs are a different matter. But the defense have come along way against them since 1991.

So this will be the game. Shelling a patch of land on both sides will likely be common for the next 5 years.

It is actually a good way to let off steam.

The threat to Seoul is highly overrated; even if all their guns could hit it from the other side of the DMZ (Only a few of them can), they probably wouldn't have enough ammunition to keep them firing long enough to flatten Seoul.

Not to mention targetting Seoul would deprive the North Koreans of the use of their artillery, which is one of their biggest assets, in actual combat, thus probably costing them the war.
