Default Scary Stuff! Fictional EAS Situations

For those who do not know what the EAS Or Emergency Alert System is look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_Alert_System (Noncontroversial topic = Ok to use Wiki as info)

Mainly is that strange sound you hear on TV As they do the tests. The reason for the sounds is so that Other stations EAS equipment tuned into it will know what to rebroadcast. The chain is supposed to continue and within 10 minutes the entire country able to listen in to the President or a Singular source. Of course that has never happened and most of the time it is activated locally for local emergencies, Amber Alerts, and Weather events.

Have you ever wondered tho what a BAD situation's EAS might sound like. I wondered that myself multiple times so I was excited when I found a group of videos from several youtube members about fictional EAS Situations. These are created from a mix of programs and audio creators Text to speech and video creation software. Obviously they are fake. Some I believe are recreations based on NWS Text and other sources but none of them came from the EAS itself. Which is um good because I rather not have by brains eaten by a Zombie...

Speaking of which it seems to be everything from the silly Zombie

To the recent

To to the storm

To the horrific

For a great deal of other fictional simulations see http://www.youtube.com/user/theEASexperience#g/u and http://www.youtube.com/user/EASvideocreator#g/u

To me these videos are a cold terror without emotion that makes you think. What if I was there? Some of the situations are downright horrific while others are sudden and terrifying without the use of video scenes just text on various color backgrounds.

Anyone else into these fictional EAS simulations?

Jebus that sound's annoying. We got that too (except for the speech, they really didn't think of the blind on that one ) and it's just SOS repeating over and over and the text rolling on the screen.

The speech is to provide detailed info to TV and Radio. It helps when TV and Radio can be used as sources for the info. It keeps the "chain" from being easily compromised.

I've come across a few of these.

But what REALLY gives me the chills is this:

For some, perhaps the last sound they'd ever hear before the big flash.

Very true indeed. And while the EAS is more resilient to sections of stations going out that partially plagued EBS planning. It is not without accidents of its own.

What I don't understand about this news bit tho is how silly people somehow get nuclear attack from audio from a confused talk show host. And NOBODY has the ears to decode the SAME signal. And on top of that calling her realitives to take shelter? Does that not prove how silly people can get? Mass calling jams the lines preventing emergency services to use the lines.

On a related note:

Some of you might know that one already. But I wanted to post it anyway.

This scenario is always coming back into my head when I hear people here complaining about the reunification. Yes, there are lots of people doing so. Mostly because of the way it was done in economical terms, e.g. 1:1 currency exchange rate etc.
But I always think, however poorly it might have been dealt with, we can still thank the heavens that the Cold War ended as it did. Seeing how mankind usually deals with things, we were a lucky bunch indeed.

BTW, this movie has a few weaknesses. For example, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that there are people there giving interviews in a cozy documentary after the fact, as if nothing happened. Then again, it would have been hard to tell the story with nobody left telling it. Still, it might have possibly been a bit more plausible if it was done like 100 years (or 1000+) after. As it is done, it seems like it happened only last year or so.

BTW, it is an originally German production by channel 2 state television station, which is why it somewhat centers around German players and news reports regarding the Western / NATO side.
Then again, the divided Germany of course *was* very much the epicenter of the Cold War and in the event of a possible escalation, as in this scenario.

EDIT: Disregard. Now watching it again, I see it was well done in terms of parties involved. I remembered it a bit differently.

EDIT 2: No, wait, I see now that the English / International version has been a little bit edited when it comes to journalists / news reports. Obviously to have the English / US viewers get to see more familiar faces, so that a similar authentic effect materializes for them as for a German watching "his" daily news reporters.

That was a very well made movie, one of my favourites.

There's also:

And...to a lesser extent (but still well made):

It was still a scary as hell production considering all that was needed was a paranoid hardliner..

"Countdown to looking Glass"

Now that is a scary scenario. It would appear the president gave nuke authority and fled Washington knowing what was going to happen in that TV film. Why? My guess is the financial crisis was simply so bad that to the nutjob president. A war was better than peace. It a bit opposite from "Red Storm Rising"

Had there been peace the likelihood would be global economic crisis much worse than the 07 08 version leaving the soviet union free to gobble up more nations. When the leaker man wanted the journalist to leave it was obvious to him nobody wanted to listen. His evidence was ignored and by the time EBS sounded it was too late. Safeguards are in place to prevent such madness in the real world and the former ship commanded was wrong saying nukes are first on the table. Everyone and their mother knows that once nukes are loose there is no going back.

Just imagine in that universe what was going on at the end of the movie. EBS was far more reliable at that point especially when warning was given of its activation. All the stations radios were set and when the Tone sounded (There was only an annoying attention noise no digital modem signals were used with EBS) It was likely only a matter of minutes before Weather radios went off across the country (because of tuneout factor NWS stations only sounded the EBS tone on the weather frequencies in the case of a wide area event like a wide area tornado warning no EAS differentiation sadly) A howling tone that penetrates the night with a cold steel fear that chaos is on the way. Screens across the nation go to black with the text "Emergency Action Notification" flashing in bold.. Adding to the cold terror of the moment. Smaller station without proper EBS links follow rules and drop off the Air leaving people moving the dial to constant stations of nothing but a singular connection to destiny. A frantic knock on the door. People outside are begging to be let in because traffic has halted as people flee their vehicles and shelter is too far away. A gov official has replaced the computer EBS voice and notes of the situation leading to likely nuclear attack in a matter of hours and instructions on what to do in case of attack. The people are inside and furniture is broken up and placed at the windows. Power tools are dragged in from cars and people frantically run about the neighborhood blasting in nails to reinforce the temporary shelters. The phone lines are shut down to attempt to protect equipment from EM damage. 911 offline Emergency EBS blares its terror once more.

Sorry for my bit of fan fiction there. Just wanted to convey how EBS and EAS fiction is terrifying. The kind of terror you get from reading books like World War Z

BTW Oberon where did you first see that "Countdown to Looking Glass"

I have to admit now it is one of my all time favorite films. It is low budget but I cant stop watching that ending. It was just so perfect... One might think.. "What happens next?" Nothing... nothing pleasant happens next. I am actually messing around with a story now of a person who watches this and it forced to react when the EBS sounds. As far as the story goes. Its over... Countdown To looking Glass is the perfect title in my opinion because looking glass is about the only place to be to be untouched by what what happened later in that universe.

Also the more I listen to the EBS tone at the end the more I think it is perfect. Some people claim that because it is out of place when it comes to Normal EBS procedure it is actually some kind of EM effect of a Detonation nearby. But it is obvious why it sounds that way, for those who know about EBS. If a station hears the real EBS attention tone from another station it is supposed to see what is up and tie in if needed. Broadcasting EBS tones then is likely unlawful because it would create a ton of false positives. Instead they created a tone changing high pitched effect meant to convey the pretend EBS activation but more importantly to say "The story is ending millions of people are about to die in this fictional universe and you get to think about it"

It is a DARN shame you cant get the video on DVD I don't understand why they diddnt put it out. It had some big names.

I'm a bit of a fan of the disaster film genre so I was looking through the entry on wikipedia and came across it, I googled it and found it on google videos where I linked to, it's also on youtube but broken up into chunks.

In regards to the President leaving Washington, I think that that was SOP for a nuclear exchange. As soon as BMEWS picked up incoming contacts the President would be evacuated to Nightwatch (or NEACP [Kneecap])which would go up with Looking Glass and other airbourne command centers to ensure the continuity of government and command during the exchange. The president and whoever else they could get during the warning would then be put down at either Mount Weather, NORAD or Raven Rock depending on what had been hit and what hadn't. Chances are that there are facilities that aren't public knowledge that incoming ICBMs would miss. Once there the President (assuming he or she made it, if not then it would be whoever is still alive on the chain of command) would most likely be appraised of the damage sustained and inflicted during the exchange and would then attempt to contact the enemy leadership and based on the results of that, decide on whether to initiate a second strike via SLBMs.

Of course, if the missile comes in from off the coast via a lucky Yankee boomer, then the President might not be clear in time to escape the blast, in which case I do believe there are bunkers under the White House, but communications would be kaput and so the next person in the chain of command would have to take over until contact is re-established with the President to ensure that there is no interruption in the response.

You make a good point on the fake EAS in Countdown to Looking Glass Zachstar, I never thought of it that way.

The fictional president seemed to be leaving the moment the attack on the sub happened.

What do you think on my theory that the fictional president went nuts? The Iran photo that was ignored... The authority to the group. The leaker who decided it was time to go far before the attack on the sub.

It would seem more to me that the mood of the film was the president was getting on the plane to avoid the fate of the rest of the country.

It's been a while since I've watched it all the way through, I will have to sit down and do so again, but I think by that time the war drums were beating. It was like Thirteen Days (which is a film you should check out if you haven't already) with those who wanted to show the Soviets a lesson at loggerheads with those who don't want to risk a war and the President was caught in the middle. I shall have to watch it all again before I make a definite conclusion but I think the President heading for NECAP would have happened if he was sane or not.
