Default Green Lamp on Hydrophone?

Simple question really.
The green bulb that lights up when you sweep over a contact.
Did they have this, or something similar on the hydrophone unit in real life?
Or is it just something that SH4 has added?

I'm giving serious consideration to hiding the light in my install, to force me to listen to the hydrophone rather than just do a fast sweep and look at the light.
But, if this represents something that was present on the real unit, then I may well leave it.

They had a magic eye, which was much better and possibly maybe sort of like a light, but not quite. So representative-ish.

A magic eye?
That sounds interesting Nisgeis. What is it?

So the green lamp is a representation of a capability they had IRL. I guess I'll leave it alone then.

Thanks Nisgeis.

EDIT: OK, I just found this.

Interesting stuff, I had no idea.

No, I didn't either. I think it depends how old you are . There's a better animated pic a few down on this page:

On the subject of the hydrophone, is it supposed to be available while on the surface?? I'm noticing in my latest career that I can only use it manually when I'm submerged, but yet I still get contact reports from my crewman while I'm surface running. Is this just another one of those leftover bugs that never got fixed?? The only mod I'm using is RSRDC. I noticed that with FOTRS that I couldn't work it manually at all in the Tambor and Gato class subs.

When I was a kid I had an old tube radio with that magic eye tube. The radio had a nice 15" or so speaker in the cabinet beneath the radio and picked up just about any frequency (it had rows of various frequency bands) and the magic eye was great at helping in tuning. Of course being a kid I mostly listened to WLS Chicago - approx 400 - 500 mi away - to listen to stuff (50's rock 'n' roll) we didn't hear (at the time) where I lived.

Sorry for drifting a little OT but the "magic eye" brought back memories.

Happy Hunting!

Fleet boats had hydrophones mounted under the hull, so they could use them while surfaced. They wouldn't be anywhere nearly as effective as they are in the game, and would only be usable at slow speeds on the surface. You wouldn't have been able to run flank speed surfaced and hear anything on the hydrophones like in the game.

Thanks for the info on the magic eye. I'd seen reference to it somewhere, and I was wondering what it actually was.
