Default Torpedo boat sank me

WO spotted a warship and I determined to to be a fast moving torpedo boat, it was my 2nd patrol and there was no qualified deck gunners but I engaged anyways since a torpedo shot would obviously be impractical. They peppered my U-boat with what I assumed to be harmless machine gun rounds but looking at my boat status there was many wounded and flooding in the forward 3 compartments which resulted in my sinking. Do these boat carry powerful AP rounds or was this a glitch? Anyways awesome forum here and here is a unrelated picture from a different patrol

Hm actually I don't think it's a glitch. Planes strafing with theirguns can damage you, pt boats machine guns can damage you and armed merchants with machine guns can damage you. Remember it's not a battleship it's a uboat (boat ) it's lightly armored small and it's main weapon is it's stealthiness and ability to hide from gunfire not sustain it. Though I would probably do the same thing as you I would recommend getting out of it's range and shoot it from afar with deck gun.

Happy hunting

Ediko as saying they have a thin armament and can ruin your hull,While you can return fire, but normally they are harmless, and this is based on my experience, some have been reduced even if they are not many, and when the weather has been a much better and picture above

Despite being very sturdy in some ways, in others u-boats were incredibly fragile. Any damage to the pressure hull that left one unable to dive meant a perilous journey home with every enemy contact representing a good probability of death or capture. Taking out one torpedo boat is not worth the risk IMO.

Personally I wouldn't even waste the gun ammo on 'em, they're too small to be much of a target and so fast that getting and staying out of their firing range while still trying to land a shell on their heads just seems like more effort than it's worth even if I succeed and don't cripple my boat in the process.

I just do whatever's required to get away from them and hope they're not taking down my license plate # and calling it in to their big brothers.

Whilst going toe to toe with something that is lightly armed may be fun there is little to gain in winning this battle, with much to lose if it goes badly, so I would leave it and try to stick to what the u-boat is primarily designed to do - sink merchants with torps.

50-caliber, and 20-millimeter, and 2-pounder fire will penetrate a U-boat's pressure hull at close range. Don't hang around on the surface when your enemy can outshoot and outmaneuver you.

Yep I learned my lesson, figured the deck gunners would get her with ~2-3 misses only but that wasn't the case. Thanks for the vulnerability info y'all!

Wow, that is humiliating. At least going down to a destroyer or corvette has some honour to it, but a lousy PT boat? Bad luck, buddy.

I only use my guns to take down cripples or very small merchant vessels, of course, unarmed. You have everything to lose and very, very little to gain in risking an engagement. Even with aircraft my first reaction is to dive and hide. What is the comparative cost in Reichmarks and highly trained trained crew against a lousy flugzeug and one or two pilots? A plane can limp home with an engine knocked out, but a U-boat that can't see or dive is a losing proposition. Always remember that our primary mission is the reduction of Allied tonnage, warships being presigious, but secondary to our mission.

Machen alles kaput!

It's never worthwhile to try and gun down torpedo boats.

One single hit of strafing by the torpedo boat and your ability to dive to depth will be greatly compromised by virtue of your greatly reduced hull integrity.

Two or three strafing hits and you may as well head back to port because diving to any useful evasive depth will be too risky to try.

You might get them before they sink you, but you will take so much damage that it's never worth it.

That deck gun still has some use against naval ships, I can recall a few times when I was forced to surface after taking heavy damages in shallow waters and managed to take the main guns off a destroyer. The way I see it is I am not about to surrender my boat (not that it even allows you to)

Yep, already got one petty officer trained as a deck gunner and trained another one as a torpedo tech after tonight's patrol, sank 2 cargo ships and 2 warships (one warship hit was accidental, it took the torpedo that was intended for a small freighter). Earned some U-boat badges to pass out to the crew and the next item on the list is to get a PO qualified on the AA gun.

People would survive a lot more if they treated the game like it was real life.

Just keep this thought in mind: If I get killed I put the game away and don't play it for a year.

I guarantee you'll start thinking a lot more like a real captain.

Yeah its a good tip, I now leave warships alone unless hitting it is almost guaranteed and relatively safe. No more absurd bravery lol

I'd say that if you're in a position to guarantee a hit on a warship, you've probably taken too many risks to get to that position already.

Sailor Steve,
like your idea of forcing yourself to take a break from the game if you get killed, but a year is too long for me. The extra pleasure I would get from playing the game under those terms would be outweighed by the loss of pleasure from not playing at all for a year if I died.
So I'm going to take your concept and tweak it, I think I could lay off SH3 for a week if I died and that length of time would be enough to make me think seriously about the level of risk I'm taking.
