Rock guitarist Gary Moore dies

The renowned rock guitarist Gary Moore has died, the BBC has learned.

Mr Moore, 58, was, originally from Belfast, and was a former member of the legendary Irish group Thin Lizzy.

Adam Parsons, who manages Thin Lizzy, told the BBC that Mr Moore had died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr Moore was originally drafted into Thin Lizzy by its singer Phil Lynott. He later gained acclaim for his solo work and was a former member of the Irish group Skid Row.

The Northern Ireland guitarist was only 16 when he moved from Belfast to Dublin in 1969, to join Skid Row, which featured Lynott as lead vocalist.

He was later brought into Thin Lizzy by Lynott to replace the departing Eric Bell, another guitarist from Northern Ireland.

Mr Bell told the BBC on Sunday he was still "in shock" at Mr Moore's death.

RIP Gary Moore.

Truely gifted player and a great loss.

Had the fortune to see him live on the "Still Got The Blues" tour at the Oxford Apollo. The guy did seven encores. Amazing guy.

He was far better than the rest of the music world gave him credit. I still have an album he recorded as part of "BBM", a sort of "Cream" supergroup project with Moore, Ginger Baker & Jack Bruce. It really was a very good album that was overshadowed by the "Cream" connection. I believe I also have an instructional video Jack Bruce issued that featured Moore on lead guitar. It is always sad to see someone pass who did not fully recieve their due while alive. There are so many 'flash-bang' "shred" guitarists who claim the spotlight and so many truly gifted artists who don't.

RIP, Gary Moore...

booooo

Always liked his music - saw his band play at rock city in nottingham some years back.
Not to mention Thin Lizzy

not the version I know best, the one I like is a little more laid back, can't find it though.
close enough

Some of the most fun rock/blues music I have ever learned or played.

somehow unexpected... I saw him 2 years ago, he was in good shape, vital and did no substance abuse like many other musicians who are even older than he was...

goodbye Gary and thanks for the music!
