Default Run Silent Run Deep(movie)

Rainy afternoon while visiting my grandfather, so we put in the Run Silent Run Deep DVD.One of my favorite sub movies with great acting by Gable and Lancaster(young Don Rickels too lol) and the battle scenes were not bad, esp for the era in which this movie was made.Really wish Hollywood would make a great sub movie, with all the special effects, would be great.

Default Even better book

I had trouble believing Clark Gable, who it seemed was shaking with illness during some scenes. This may have been one of his last films. He wasn't one of my heros anyway.

The book was much better, which led me to get the dvd.

The book was very good along with the sequel "Dust on the Sea", followed by a pretty good cold war era "sequel", "Cold is the Sea".

I liked the movie too. Some pretty good submarine shots. The only resemblence between movie and book though was pretty much title and character names.

It could have Richard O'Kane as its main character. It could start in private ryan fasion with an old man aboard a muesum sub, with a "Grandpa, didn't you used to be on one of these?"... screen fades to flashback.... aboard the USS wahoo's second war patrol depicting his frustration with the current captain. Then the next patrol with Mush mouth morton proclaiming, they're all expendable. Then onto the reconitering of wewak harbor, and wahoo's other epic patrols. Then it could follow O'kane as he is transferred of wahoo to take command of the Tang. It could then show the emotional reactions at the news that the wahoo was lost, the Sea trials of the tang and the deliberate 620 foot deep dive during those trials.

Then finally showing Tangs exploits, right on upto the loss of the tang, and O'kanes eventual repatriation from POW status. We could then end this 4 part mini series in true "Saving private ryan" fashion with an old man with a sub combat pin looking tearfully at the Silent service monument at pearl harbor with his grandson.

I'm all for it. We could use a great mini series about the adventures of O'kane and crew.

Might even result in a decent game release to satisfy the cheering masses, eh?

side note:

(I am not interested in SH5 anytime soon judging from a perusal of the messages posted about it.) Maybe if we could get an OM Mod in reverse for SH5 ....on a stable game... maybe.

Aren't they making a movie about this from the book?

Here's what I'd go for, for a mini series:

1. Depth charging of the Puffer
2. Last patrol of the Tang.
3. Gilmore and the Growler (although I read in the Pampanito book, this story was waaaay exaggerated)
4. S-39 v Lingayen Gulf.
5. Any Wahoo patrol

What think ye?

Big budget film? Probably O'Kane.

Personally I would like to see a redo of the Silent Service TV series. Done with modern technology. Enright, Archerfish and Shinano, for starters. S-boat exploits.

Money to the Germans to do the same thing with the U-bootwaffe.

I would love to see an HBO treatment of the Pacific Submarine Campaign a la "The Pacific" following three or four of the best known commanders and their crews from Pearl Harbor to Hiroshima.

Not gonna happen though.

Just think of the episode when the sub returns to PH. Knowing HBO's track record with making sure we know everyone gets laid...

Wahoo does the red lght district

So, if you were to make a movie about the Wahoo and Tang and Richard O'Kane, who would you have portray O'Kane?

Who would you have portray Morton?

Having watched "Big Stars" like Sean Connery, Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford play Sub commanders... I vote for unknown actors!

Seriously... one of the brilliant things about Band of Brothers and The Pacific is that you could really buy into the characters instead of thinking "Why does the Russian Captain have a Scottish/Irish/American accent?"

I agree that mostly little known or unknown actors would be great. However, I believe Matt Damon should play Mush Morton, the resembalance and he's a decent actor. The red headed guy from Pearl Harbor would make a great Fluckey.
