Default CFG Tweak Fixes Helm/Range?

This just happened, so I don't know if it is a fleeting fix or not, in fact, not sure what fixed what.
I was having big problems with my watch crew failing to report sightings until I was in the process of being rammed by DDs or run over by Merchants. So I edited the main.cfg file so that TC would revert to 1 rather than 8 on enemy contact. I changed both cfgs in the game install folder and the documents folder. Upon restarting the game I find that now when I order 7kts, my helm makes 7kts, not 10 or 11 kts as before (I had to click around on the speed dial until I approximated the speed I wanted). Furthermore, my sub's range seems greatly decreased, and more realistic, for a given amount of fuel. Right now I'm at 73% and the navigator reports the best possible range at the most conservative speed to be around 12000 km, where before I was able by choosing a speed just in-between 10 and 11 kts to get 17 or 18 thousand kms on that much fuel.
What up wit dat?

Sounds like you were recharging your batteries when you checked those new values. While you're recharging you're only using one engine to propel the boat, hence the slower speed. The other engine is running at flank speed recharging the batteries as fast as it can, hence the shorter range since you're using more fuel.

Nope, that was my first thought. My batteries were at 100%. The Std/Recharge functions can be twitchy, so I submerged and used 1% just so I could recharge and then switch back to standard propulsion. Didn't change the new sub behavior, which I consider a fix, and which remains in effect. I have not installed any mods to correct sub performance, to my knowledge.

Starting a new career--died, rammed (quite unintentionally, I assure you) a freighter at flank speed. So with full tanks I can still get 18000 km at about 7kts (not realistic, but I'll take it until I find the mod that fixes it). But my speed still works better, so something is different.

Got the Historic Specs mod.
