Tech Problems: Can't Update

Hi folks,

I've encountered an odd and very frustrating problem in trying to play Silent Hunter 3 again. I hadn't played in a while, but I had an old copy, with an old version of GWX, on my machine from several years ago. Seeing that a newer version of Grey Wolves was now available, I uninstalled the whole kitten kaboodle (uninstall from add/remove programs, yes to delete save games/profiles, then deleted the entire SilentHunterIII folder to remove all modded files), as instructed so I could install the new version. Then I re-installed Silent Hunter III, and tried to patch up to the latest version. That's where the problems started. When starting any of the patches (I've tried 1.1 to 1.4b, and both download and DVD versions even though mine is clearly DVD) I get the following error message after "Checking...":

"The program cannot update the installed version of Silent Hunter III EMEA DVD 1.0 to 1.3 because of the following reason:

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\menu\de_menu.tx t: unknown version."

I tried uninstalling again, installing again, uninstalling yet again and installing to a new directory this time in case it was some fragment from the old install... same error. Any advice? This is really frustrating!

Are you sure you don't already have 1.4?

After the game loads, look at hte bottom right corner of the menu screen. It will tell you what version you have. If it says v1.4, you're good to go-no need to patch.

Good thought, but I don't think that's it. I actually don't see any version number in the bottom right of the main menu, but in "properties" for sh3.exe it says version 1.0.0.1 and the readme.txt is for version 1.0 as well.

Edit - Were there any DVD versions that had all the patches pre-installed? Mine is from quite a number of years ago, which is part of what makes me doubt it. I guess I'll try installing GWX on top of it and just see if it works for now.

You can go into the referenced file and delete the .txt file. The patch will install a new version of it. BTW The patch will give you the same message for the other .txt files in there. Delete them all, and the patch should then install just fine.

HW3 is correct but when you've installed the game go into the root folder and right click on the SH3 icon (not any shortcut elsewhere such as on the desktop).

Go to the version tab then click on the file version near the bottom, that will give you a true indication of what version you have.

It looks like your not patched to 1.4b....here is a link to the patches:
