Default Akula - can't assign targets?

I'm trying to learn DW... In the Akula (haven't tried the other subs yet) I can't seem to assign targets to my torpedoes/missiles. Weird thing is, I was doing it earlier today and now it's not working. It's not the game's fault, I'm just dumb and forgot how to do it right... I looked around the manual but can't come up with the answer as the section on the Akula's fire-control merely states something like 'this is where targets are assigned to weapons'. I've got all auto-crew off and I'm trying to learn TMA so I plotted my solution, selected it in the little drop-down menu but when I click on a weapon's number, nothing happens. And it's not like I'm trying to fire a land attack missile at a sub, I'm certain (checked with 'show truth' when I realized it wasn't working) that it's a Victor III and my solution is spot on. What am I doing wrong? What prerequisites are to be met before a contact can be assigned to a weapon?

Oh and also, I tried a bunch of times but can't seem to wire-guide torpedoes either. The manual says very little about this and I couldn't figure it out.

Strange. From your post, all the "usual" reasons this might happen are ruled out.

A few guesses. For one thing, stay out of Truth when assigning weapons. It won't work when Truth is on. Another stab in the dark is that you might be on the wrong sub-page. Fire control is divided into 3 sub-stations, and when you say you've clicked on the number I suppose it's possible that you might have meant the number from the Launch Panel instead of the target display. Make sure you're at the target display.

Another guess is that you might be clicking the wrong number. The Akula has external and internal tubes, so if wanted the 53cm in internal tube 1 but external tube 1 had a LAM and you accidentally clicked external 1, then it won't assign.

Not all torpedoes can be assigned to attack submarines. Make sure you're not assigning a wakehomer.

Wire guidance is accessed from the "W" beneath the tube number, or by clicking the weapon itself on the fire control map. Not all weapons can be wireguided (53cm and 65cm for stock DW).

It may be the "show truth" option turnit off.

Maybe simply insufficient air to launch the weapons (has to be more than 50%)?

Check Air Remaining in Ship Control screen...

I still haven't figured it out. Truth is off, and I did realize that the fire control station was in three separate parts. I'm at the 'target display' part and can't figure out how to get the damned solution into the torpedoes (or anything, for that matter...). When I right click on the contact, the 'engage with...' option doesn't appear. And it's not only sonar contacts... there are ships around and I can't assign radar contacts to my ASMs either. And I tried different missions too to make sure it wasn't some weird bug in just one game.

Have you classified the targets? Are they at least classified and surface or sub? You're weapons cannot engage unknown class targets.

The engage with menu is possibly disabled, go in to options to reenable it. Can you assign a snapshot to a tube? if you can do that then there maybe something wrong with your install.

Yea I can assign snapshots. This just got even more weird. I was playing the first campaign mission, trying to sneak in to get the special forces ashore and having the same problem. But I wasn't too bothered that I couldn't assign targets since I figured I wouldn't have to shoot anyway. After dropping off the special forces I was told do damage a surface combatant... So I tried to assign an SS-N-27 to one of the frigates in the harbour and it worked?! I'm 100% sure that I was NOT doing things any different than before. And after that I could also assign torpedoes and everything so it's not bugged anymore, although I really don't understand what happened.

No I hadn't classified the ship I shot at. I only had it to 'surface' and 'assumed hostile'. On the other hand I had positively ID'ed a Victor-III and could not assign torpedoes to in the early part of the mission, although it did work normally after I dropped off the special forces (not that I think it has anything to do with the special forces). I guess I must've hit a switch without noticing...

'Surface' is enough. It just can't be 'unknown' or not compatible with the weapon.
