Interesting video I found

I'm playing SH3 GWX at the mo (seriously rocks guys

) and I'd met up with a resupply boat in Cadiz which started me wondering how they transfered the torps from the ship to the sub.

Had a bit of a search and found that the torps were transfered via a winch, wrapped in lifejackets to the waiting sub (that was sitting with decks awash)

Anyhow I found this video (poor quality I'm afraid) that shows some of the operation and I thought I'd share it with you guys / gals.

Must have been back breaking work.

Great video. I'll be downloading that one.

In the case of a resupply surface ship the torpedoes would be hoisted aboard using the ship's crane.

Whilst googling and trying to answer my own query I came accross this thread

Which details the whole procedure of loading torpedoes into a type IX, which I found fascinating.

Especially this picture which shows them shoe-horning a torpedo into an external bay using a special cradle.

Notice the guy on the right is standing on a winch, which in turn is resting on a stool - no health and safety back then lol.

I'ts really quite interesting and I have no idea why I'd not wondered about it before.

Not just torpedos but a Doctor/personnel when required.

Some of these are from the same operation as the video clip I suspect and the bottom photo shows a good example of running 'decks awash'.

I wish you could see all this equipment and personnel on deck when pulling in external eels, and you could not dive when doing it!

That's not external storage - that's the 'torpedo hatch'. All fish are loaded into the boat that way.

Good find!

In Das Boot the sub surfaced into a hollowed hold in a merchant ship belly. The port authorities never saw the sub arrive or depart. I'm guessing that was a true story.

Shifting a fish in those seas was dangerous work.

Well I wondered about that - so that clears that up, ta matey

The same thread mentions the rails on the top of a type IX to manouver the torps into position for the external hatches, so it kinda didn't make sense.

Incredible pictures Jimbuna , you really get a sense of how big the "fish" are - which book did they come from? I wouldn't mind getting a copy if it's still available.
