Default Can anyone help? (1st patrol mission - hunt for the wounded bear)

So, I have just started playing SH4 (the first time to play the series) and I am having a bit of a problem to find the 'Shokaku' carrier even though I have spent days travelling between the two places - Rabaul and Celebes sea. My job is to locate it and then sink it. Can anyone suggest to me some methods to speed things up. I wonder will the mission end if the carrier reaches the final destination.

Anyway, thanks a lot!

I have done this one a few times and on full realism its tough to sink that carrier. But she is actually easy to find once you know where to look. The course she follows can vary slightly from mission to mission, but she will always round that peninsula on the southern island of the Phillipines bordering the north of the Celebes sea. Her course will take her into the Sulu sea then into the Java Straight.

I usually head north at flank speed, diving alot during the day to avoid aircraft. Head into the Celebes and setup an ambush point on the western tip of the peninsula of the southern most island of the Philipines (the large one bordering the north Celebes).

During the day stay submerged when you are at your ambush point and use the hydros and just wait. She will be along soon. She moves at 16 knots with 3 escorts. Even with 4 well placed hits she may not go down, but if she slows you can wait and finish her off later.

Hope I did nt give away too much. Good luck you re gonna need it.

I'm surprised you got that as your first mission, I've been on many patrols and never been issued a mission that challenging or fun. Good luck with it, and welcome to SH4!

"Hunt for Wounded Bear" is a single patrol. It is not part of a full campaign....

Don't look where she should be, either. They ignored the real route taken (odd, since she was just missed by several US subs as I recall). TI'm not talking about a trivial difference, the real CV went via Truk, then north.

Sounds like a cool mission, wish I would get it. What year does this mission happen in?

After you start SH4, click on War Patrol. You will se it listed there.
The patrol is in June of 42....

Not part of the full campaign, but it is in the campaign, could be RSRD adds it. It actually finally makes it home through the Bungo after a few stops. I was in the Bungo early waiting on the Midway group, but I was early, so partrolled around. Then here comes a lone Shokaku north through the strait. It was going 19kts, had to go in on the surface under fire and still a long shot, but sunk it. I thought it strange and checked and I was there the actual date it came through.

So the Shokaku returning from the Coral Sea is in RSRD? What route does it take.I rarely play early war with RSRD, too many lone merchants.May give it a try, would be cool.

I'm having a ball with RSRD, more than I ever have. Things I have recently found..

Leave Manila head to the Bungo you can catch the JP's returning from Pearl Harbor.

I assume the Shokaku takes the route it took. I was just stumped I found it returning alone through the Bungo while waiting for the Midway fleet to leave...Sunk it and did a online search and the night I sunk it was historically correct in the Bungo.

I also didn't realize all the carrier traffic at the start of the war down south, except for the trip to the Indian Ocean. Using this map..seems I post it everywhere, I started a new career out of Sura and found the Carriers attacking Ambrom, Carriers leaving Palau for Kendari..sunk 6 in this patrol. Also just found the large JP fleet heading to the Indian Ocean, 5 carriers, 5 BB's....cut it off in the Timor pass.

So two patrols and have seen 11 carriers...

These maps have worked to perfection with RSRD, great for ambush points. I even ran into 2 large invasion groups east of Kendari. I've never looked at the ME, but I'm sure most of this work is Lurkers. Using history as a guide, I can constantly fight large convoys and battles and never run out of finding new stuff.

Just look at the JP carrier fleet movements in the Indian Ocean...I didn't realize they went all the way around and came back to Sing from the west...Nice Foray.. Very large group with the BB's.
Not sure if they helped out with the invasion of Christmas Island or not, but probably did. I've attacked the large invasion fleet headed to Christmas Island..another nice group..

As far as I'm concerned RSRD is a work of art...

yea I am enjoying RSRD now, will admit I had to look at the ME to figure out the convoy lanes but now I have it, its fun.Last patrol out of Fremantle with a Gato in Jan/Feb 44, 41k tons, all from two convoys, 7 ships.Lots of planes since I was only 100 miles or so off Luzon most of the time. Most aggrvating part is the inadequate escort. Now in Feb 44 escorts for convoys were still not a top priority so even large convoys would have 1 or 2.Thing is these escorts were Type A/B's and prob wouldnt been effective but for some reason in Feb 44 they have no active sonar.Even in calm seas, couldnt get me, one got lucky and managed to explode some charges at 300 feet close to me but it was luck, minor damage.Wish someone would fix it, they should have active sonar in Feb 44 i believe.

Second career going to start out of Pearl in Dec 41 and head to wake island to see if can fight the invasion force and carrier strike group that detached from the pearl harbor force(ME says they are there)

Also, I found the Shokaku where she returns from Coral Sea, historically correct she was traveling alone? I figured a few escorts. The Japanese were damn fools for not escorting their ships better most of the war.

Is this a new problem with the TypeAB that wasn't in 1.9..If it's an RSRD issue and probably is as I don't think anything changed, I never noticed it.
The ones in Formosa in 44 are pinging, so I assume OK...Unless something else.

Not sure what's up with the planes TMORSRD. Again, think they would be the same, maybe I haven't fought carrier planes early war. So peod trying to catch the TF I attacked and planes are out. If I dive I'll lose the TF, so I stayed up since dark is coming. The planes made several machine gun passes, but never dropped a bomb...many passes, this same plane. Finally the devil drops and gets a bullseye. But this same plane type flies over, does a half ass dive and levels off..but finally will dive...

Something else machine gun fire from planes are really damaging topside stuff, but no damage to hulls, just top stuff, but they're hurting my guys.
1.9 my guys never got hurt by gun fire, now one pass puts the AA guy in bad shape..been through 3 gunners so they don't die. Actually I like this, very realistic...

Well, believe this TF is gonna leave me behind....damn planes.

I believe it's an RSRD issue and prob effects early Type A/B's in early 44.What month are you in?(you said youre off Formosa in 44) No pinging, trust me youd notice their lack of ability to really get you.

You ever engage the wake island forces? Should be interesting.Going to head there with a Porpoise class.Have to wait until tomorrow though, need to get some sleep, classes most of the day.

Did you find the Wake group? Course Midway is way off, but think I'll go looking for the Midway invasion fleet that leaves Saipan and Guam. I did finally try Alaska and found the carriers that attacked Dutch Harbor during the Midway campaign.
