Default Marker buoys?

So I was reviewing some sub schematics:

And I notice a callout for a "marker buoy". What was this for? Raise a buoy if your sub is sunk on the bottom?

That's exactly what it's for.

I've seen a bunch of other pictures of it in books. The ones on a Type II are painted red and white.

I could see this buoy coming free while you are under attack.

"Herr Kaleun! I don't know how they are able to home in our position so accurately!"

They were red and white in peacetime
IIRC all painted to match hull after war broke out
