Default Convince me to get this game?

Greetings all.

I've been aching to play a modern naval sim to fill the void before Naval War: Arctic Circle is released and I keep coming back to "thinkin' about trying" DW. I have my credit card ready to buy this but something is holding me back. I guess I just need that one last push.

Just worried this is too hardcore. I've accrued many many hours with SHIII (with GW mod) as well as IL-2 and DCS: Black Shark, but I am no means an expert in any modern military hardware.

Are there good in-game tutorials in DW or are they mostly video based (i.e. Youtube)? Also - is the 500+ page manual absolutely necessary to fully get over the apparently steep learning curve? I guess I should mention I really only plan on playing this offline.

Apologies if many of these questions have been asked before.
Thank you kindly.

It's fairly hardcore, but there are "worse" out there. Falcon 4 is definitely harder to learn. I can't speak for Black Shark or the SH series.

You don't need the printed manual--and I don't think it's available anymore--but RTFM is non-optional for this one. Not necessarily the whole thing at once, but definitely the sections applicable to every platform and to the platform you want to learn first.

Tutorials... there are a few, but it seems that with each sim in the series, the tutorials got a bit worse. The community has tried to make up for it; see, e.g.:

If you can get over the learning curve on BS you should be good with DW (I'm basing this on my experience with DCS A-10C). There are lots of EXCELLENT guides for the various platforms around that are as (or more) valuable than the manual. The manual gives you the background, the guides created by various users actually tell you how to work the platforms. Look for the guides in the downloads here and over at the Subguru site mentioned in Molon Labe's post
