SH4 and Vista Installation

For those members that are moving on to Vista as an OS, do not think Vista will not let you run the game. I run Vista 64 Home Premium and SH4 runs perfectly. There are however a few things recommended! From personal experience I did the following to allow Vista to run SH4:

1. Create a root folder for your game(s). I created a root folder off the hard drive and named it GAMES2. I named it GAMES2 because there is a GAMES folder supplied by the Vista OS. Less confusion. This folder contains the MS provided OS games, ie chess, etc. So, you can name it KILLER SUB GAMES if you want. Up to you!

2. Once done, insert your SH4 disc for installation. When prompted showing the files will load to the X86 files, click Browse and navigate to your newly created root folder for your games. Click OK and let it load.

3. Once complete, install your patches or 1.5 add on disc. No worries, the install will find your UBI folder and load correctly.

4. As a side note, sometime the very first time you start SH4 with Vista, the menu screen will be black yet the music is playing, etc. No problem, open up the task manager and shut down the game. Go to your video card tweak program and reset the card to the default values(usually just a box to check and click OK. Start the game and the menu should not be black anymore. The game should look as it usually does. Close it out. Go back to your video card tweak program and reset the card to your liking. That's it, you will never have to do that again(unless you do a complete reinstall down the road)

5. Install JSGME. Runs like it does in XP. No issues here.

As far as running the install as administrator, no harm in doing that. I did not have do this. Some folks UAC are different from Vista OS to Vista OS. That is about it really. If anyone has anything to add, please do

I run Vista (32bit) and just installed mine under program files.

I did have to completely uninstall my virus protection software - there was one service running that I could not stop/disable... Uninstalled, rebooted...

Rebooted after base game install, installed 1.5/UBoat, rebooted, created MODS folder, installed JSGME...

No problems here...

Everyone seems to have one way or another to get SH4 going in Vista. Best part is, SH4 can play on the Vista OS. That is all that matters in the end!

To save you some headaches if you play MultiPlayer..

Install SH4 to default Directory.. this is the only game I have which must be in default Directory in Program Files.. if not:

When conecting with others..all seems fine.. once you hit a ship with a torp.. you will kick everyone from the game..except yourself...

dunno why... just does happen if installed in another place... did for me..

Ofcourse if you don't play Multiplayer.. it works fine anyplace installed.

Just got my "Gold Edition" in the mail today, shipped from the US, since I couldn't find it anywhere here.

Installed just great on vixta 64, and runs like a charm............. as long as you remove EVERY trace of prior installations.

I just dug up SH4 and decided to install it again for the first time since release (took a break back then because of all the bugs and lack of mods, and had almost forgotten about it).

First time installed on this PC, Vista 32-bit home. Installed fine and worked, but screen resolution was off, so some parts of the screen didn't show. Was not possible to adjust screen resolution in game options. Then I set the exe-file to 'Run in XP-compatible mode', and everything works good.

No sound. I do not believe that is caused by the game. Check your system set up in the sound program you have.

Try turning off hardware acceleration on your sound card and see if it helps.
What kind of sound card do you have?

I have installed SH4 with the patches and the 1.5 update per the instuctions in this thread.I am running a HP 2.6 Quad Core with 6 gigs ram and a GEForce 9800GT video card with 512 ram and running Vista 64 with service pack 3.I am the administrator of my computer and have not had problems in the past but I can not get the video to show up.I get the introduction to show but after that only a black screen and music. This also happens with SH3 which does the same thing. What can be done so I can run these sims?

Do you mean mods loading through JSGME? Are you able to get in all the patches?

what I mean is that I can only load up 1.2.. after that none of the mods will install (note i do not use JGSME because it wouldn't work on my computer)

JSGME does not work on your computer? If not you are pretty much hosed. I have never heard of JSGME not working on any OS. Sure you have loaded the game and all like I suggested?
