So, a little more than a month after the release of Silent Hunter 5, is the consensus opinion here that if Ubisoft issues the usual three or four patches for this game, and if the modders then decide to really get stuck into it, that the game will eventually be a very good one....better than SHIII or SHIV? Or is the feeling that whatever the modders try and do with it, there are just too many things wrong with it and it will never be the game that many here had hoped for?
Please...no DRM posts in this thread. I'm interested in an assesment of the potential of the game itself. ![]() |

In my opinion, bearing in mind that i am not a modder yet! Silent Hunter 5 has great potential and i beleive it will, in time, be the best Sub sim yet.

I think gameplay-wise, it has the potential to be outstanding. From what I can see in the mods forum, it looks like people are just beginning to open up the secrets of scripting and how to use that. The campaign goals have already been adjusted. I am certain that someone will undertake a complete campaign re-write at some point. The coming patch is supposedly bringing the ability to add new ship types to the game. That's going to go a long way towards fixing my personal pet peeve of the game - lack of variety of merchants.
The crew management is a hole that I'm not sure can be fixed. After seeing some of the amazing things done to SH titles by people smarter than me, I've learned to never say never. But at this point, the ham handed attempt at an RPG system is a big flaw that doesn't have an easy solution that I personally can see. But all in all, I think that yes, given the proper amount of attention by Ubi and the modders, we'll see SH5 take its place as a worthy successor to SH3/4

I agree with you guys - My only real gripe about SHV has been the awful AI and the lack of variety of targets. Both things should (hopefully) be taken care of in the upcoming patch.
My only worry is the bitch fights that keep breaking out on these forums might scare some of the potential modders away. Other than that I think SHV has the potential to be one of the best (if not the best) subsims out there. |

Hopefully SH5 will one day have a supermod, if that's the case, then it can be a very serious subsim indeed. But that may take a while.

I think that at side of technical potential and will of modders to put time and effort on it, there is another very important factor, rarely mentioned. Is Ubi going to release a new uboat subsim in 1.5-2 years? If not, then SH5 has hope, if yes, then...well, probably it will remain half way or likely less than that, with some mods but using a very small fraction of its potential.
Although I like to see new subsim games released, if they release them too frequently it is a way of limiting mods. Look at GWX4, for example. |

SH5 has huge potential and we all feel it. The game is just unfinished, but has the flavors already cooked in. I was very surprised to discover these days the Alberich camouflage implemented in the game. Is not really working, but at least is there. Moders are just beginning to learn how to mod this version, so we can expect a really great game in few months.

Agreed, been playing it box stock since its release date. I really wanted to get a feel for it sans mods. It amazingly stands alone quite well after a while which just shows that for me I had become just a bit to comfortable with SH4.
I think its going to be a great sim!

![]() Without me knowing how to mod I too cannot comment on what can be modded and what cant. All I know is our modding community has pulled off some miracles on things that were "hard coded" with SH3 and 4. |

IMO its all about what can be "undone"
sh5 has great potential "IF" the missing sh3 content and campaign years can be seamlessly reintroduced, then "IF" it can be returned to the sh3 or sh4 UI and the AI can be corrected to work flawlessly. yes i know theres a mod for that but its not fully functional and may not totally get there without dev help lots of IF's and MAYBE's in there but it looks promissing as long as UBI doesnt walk away from it and not finish "required" bug fixes |

My timeline to purchase the game has always been Christmas of this year. I figure Ubisoft will have issued their final patch by then, and the modders will be able to get stuck into the game knowing that it's as finished as Ubisoft is going to make it.
I will watch developments with interest. ![]() |

I was on the fence about SH5, I dicided the potential was there so I picked it up.
Happy I did. It's buggy and busted, but enough has been modded so far that it is playable and enjoyable. ![]() |
