Default Planes

Why won't planes attack in 1939? Going through the Channel I keep getting buzzed. If they're recon any hot-blooded pilot would take a crack at a u-boat.

They will at least attack you in late game. They are pretty harmless in the beginning of the game.

What do the planes do? Do they fly directly over you? Does this apply to all planes?

Now there are some reasons why they wouldn't attack. A plane will attack ONLY if it has bombs or torpedoes available (there are 'dummy' bombs and torpedoes loaded onto the planes that are invisible). Due to IRAI, planes attack enemy merchants and anything else along with your sub. So it is possible that they attacked a target before you and have no bombs or torpedoes and thus don't attack. I had to make it this way to get them to leave the area when they attack you. If it wasn't like this then they would just sit there pounding the same spot over and over and over.

I see. They pass close to me either long range or medium range. The seem to be tracking me. But I guessed they could still probably see my wakes. I thought that they could still use their machine-guns/cannon on me. But if you say they don't have bombs or torps maybe that's why they won't attack. I figured out when I surfaced attack a merchant they radioed for help and a plane would show up. This is in the Channel.

If you have late flak gun equipment, you can shoot down airplanes from several thousand metres. I've shot down an airplane flying at medium height at almost 4000 metres. It took a bit of ammunition, but the thing blew up.
