crash to desktop when selecting "new campaign"

I get a CTD when selecting "New Campaign" from the menu. It loads for a minute then ctd - no message, just a ctd.

However the historical missions load with no problem.

No Mods enabled
I have the 1.1 patch
I've tried re-installing (removing the folder)
I've tried reducing all graphic settings to minimum
I've tried turning off sound acceleration

i7 930 2.8G
6GB DDR3
GTX 285
Realtech Audio
XP Pro SP3 (32bit)
