Default from revolution to desolution

how the periscope view evolved up to a certain moment and then came silent hunter 5...

just a question;does anybody know where i can find the file that creates current periscope background, maybe i can add some template over it to give it a better look.

SH1-2 is looking good, UI-wise!

Interesting 'development'!

What the hell were they thinking?!?!
Talk about four steps forward five back.
It makes you think they developed SH5 iPhone version first then ported to pc.

that is just pure lack of interest in the game from their side.
this took me 7 minutes to draw.so why couldn't they make a decent background?

I think the whole interface stinks of lack of interest.
There's absolutely no character at all in it.
I mean look at the difference between the SH4 and SH5 periscope screen?
Just LOOK AT IT!
Did they get the work experience boy to do it?

Odd, nobody notes the blank canvas as a positive. I assume nobody has been to the Mods Forum either, or you would see this as a non issue.

I'm MUCH happier that they spent time on opening up the back end instead of making a few more .dds files they everyone would pick apart and mod away anyhow...

I couldn't imagine what would happen if UBI ever got a hold of a flight sim!

Well, you wouldn't see all that stuff in an actual periscope. And I do remember folks complaing back then that the screen was too busy, and too bright limiting thier vision through the scope making it hard to see at night.
So what they have done here is given as much black background as possible(makes it easier on the eyes), and trimmed the instrumentation down to just whats needed and kept it simple and back out of the way.
Most all of what made the older ones so busy was been condensed and brough into the TAI, which is something none of the previous versions had. And it's quite useful actually, it provides a mini map and tactical info at a glance without having to revert to the map view covering the entire screen.

Im beginning to see that no matter what devs did, or how they did it people will find something to be unhappy with.
For instance if they had gave you the exact screen you had before, folks would complain saying it's just the same old same old, why didnt they do something different and improved.

I agree with your point but why not give us choice.
A nice photorealistic background but then add a gamma slider so you could alter the brightness of the background to your preference.

You all do realize, when you look through such an instrument YOU DO NOT SEE THE INSTRUMENT!!!

Just like when you look through binoculars you do not see the two separate lenses, you see a blend of the two surrounded by (gasp and shock ) BLACK!!!!!

Though minimalistic, this is probably the most realistic periscope view. Yes I know there are the other UI features that are visible, would you rather then not be visible? That would make game play near impossible.

i think if one's fair he must admit that the periscope screen and the "new-age" map are below average.
if they would have added at least some eye-candy to the periscope screen it would be much more plesant*.
and i think we where all disapointed by the map they added to SHV.

but i think we have to live with it and learn to love it(or mod it).
for the rest i'm quit happy with the game, even DRM hasn't given me any troubles so far.
