Default Enemy Submarines

How do you guys deal with enemy subs? So far I've just avoided them.

Not sure how you target if the enemy sub is submerged.

Ya I can see that being a tough one. The couple threads I saw did not mention the sub being submerged.

Perhaps a 360° salvo?

I took one out on the surface with my deck gun, it didn't even try to dive?

They can dive surface and shoot torpedos, but they just dont always choose to do these things when it matters.....
I made a test mission with a U-class and used a German merchie as bait.
The U-class sniffed him out ... but then, for what ever reason decided he had something more important to attend to in the opposite direction.

They're really buggy. I shot at one and it sank, but a few minutes later it came back to the surface, I shot at it again and it sank for a second time! How buggy is that?! Oh no... wait...

Best way I guess is to shoot them with a torp when they are on the surface, otherwise they yo-yo.

I ran across one off the north-eastern coast of England. Unfortunately it dove and I lost contact.

A short while later as I was circling it's last known position, it ended up running aground and whent splat. Depth below keel was only like 25 meters or so.

Now that's actually pretty realistic in the Silent Hunter world. I mean who here hasn't at least once hit the crash dive button, only to realize there's only 16 meters of water below the keel? Too late to turn back!

sunk one in 'total Germany' camp on my second patrol! was serficed and couden't see me in the weather, ie both if us surfaced, all eyes no ears. landed a torp just below the conning, died 1 hit, was sad to see it not break in two or have some seeable damage...

haven't seen a US sub yet, but then again i only am mid 'happy times' camp.

I was also wondering how sub to sub warfare would go. i was actually hopeful that she would dive so i could test hydrophone scan with 4 torp salvo submerged. although how i would measure her depth ??

I shot one with the deck gun, damaged it pretty good. It crash dived, I dove with it and tried to match the depth by using the attack parascope underwater to keep an eye on it....but at that range underwater your fish dont really have time to arm or anything and just bounce off the guy lol....

He surfaced again after a bit and I finished him off with the deck gun.

Got a nice little picture of him resurfaced and me just coming up right on his tail...lol. It was the first sub i ran into so i wasnt about to let him go!

I've got a save game with a sub in my sights. I keep hitting her with torps and HE and AP deck gun but no damage. She doesn't even slow down. I don't know what's wrong with it...Anyone else have that problem?

EDIT: Managed to get a point blank torp shot in, less than 400 meters away. I don't think she was diving when she was hit. Sub went down almost immediately, but I get no kill marker or tonnage on my record. Is it still considered sunk or is she dived?

There were only 1 or 2 events in that era when a submerged sub torpedoed another submerged one successfully, afaik. Probably lucky shots by really good commanders.

Without active homing torps or wire guidance it's just to difficult I guess.

From my experence the kill wont show up on the map, but it will show up in your log, so if you see a message in your log then you got her killed.
