I un-installed completely, re-installed and patched to 1.2. I started a new campaign and was generally pleased with the stability of this release--and then made it out of the canal, and towards the English East coast.
I received a radio contact--not far from my position, and decided to check it out. I went through my routine--laying in wait with the contact about 10 km off my port bow. The sonarman picked up the contact immediately (to my pleasant surprise)--and then....then....what???!! With the stock game, unless I'm missing something--there is no freaking way to communicate with the Sound man! I couldn't ask for a report, couldn't ask him to follow the target, couldn't do much of anything except ask how he was doing! He gave me updates now and then--but when I'm trying to track a target non-visually, I need to know information when I need to know it--not when he decides to give it to me! I was suddenly appalled at the state of feature missing from the stock game, and had forgotten that the Modders had made these un-included features possible only through their effort--as they were in no way included in the stock game. I hit F1 and looked at the commands available--nothing regarding hydrophone commands. I couldn't put the men on battle-stations. I knew the devs had left some stuff for the Modders to tweak--but I had no idea they were expecting the Modders to actually COMPLETE fundamental features. Again, my hats off to all of you. Shame on Ubi.

Rumor is there was a bunch of voice tube resources half finished... makes me wonder if they had planned for communication with various officers/stations throughout the boat. After all, modding the interface to allow the commands to be issued works.
I assume they either didn't have time to do it, or had other priorities... |
