I need some help editing a skin

I made this NSS_Balao_T01.DDS using Microsoft Paint(Native Vista Version) but I am unable to add any costic effects. Every time I start trying to do some coustic effects, it just trashes the skin.

Can someone help me out?

Did some more work on the aft keel area and added ripped effect on ballast tanks.

Won't you need a program able to work with layers? For ease, I mean? There are some free like GIMP o.a. or - if you want it - I have a Photoshop Elements 5 you can have? Works fine in both Vista and Windows 7.

Like your work and double impressed if it's all made in Paint

Thank you for the complement
I use DXTBmp to open the DDS and export it to Paint. I used the trial version of Photo Shop Pro X2 to make a few skins until it expired but I really can't justify spending $60.00 on a program(s) to edit skins for another game that cost $40.00. Using Paint is a pain.
I just resize the image to 4096 x 4096 to smooth any changes so editing painfully slow because the tools are so small and there are no effects in Paint. Then I resize down to 2048 x 2048 or 1024 x 1024 to save.

Is GIMP a Graphics Manipulator like DXTBmp or is it actually a editor?
Not sure if giving me Photoshop Elements 5 is leagal but interested.

Try this. It was developed as a replacement for MSPaint and is compatable with all common file types used. Will work in layers, too.

And, no I don't know how it works yet! It resizes screenies real nice!

+1

I installed it to be able to see some of the SH4 pics and it's free, fast and easy to use

OK, this Paint replacement is good but it doesn't have a Air Brush tool.
I really like it's gradient tool.

GIMP is a very powerful editor. It's open source and free (legally ). It can do nearly everything that Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro can. You definitely want to learn to work with layers and alpha channel transparencies.

Plus, there's a 'portable' version of GIMP that can run off of a thumb drive or memory stick.

I started off with Paint Shop Pro several years back, so the user interface was a little tricky to me at first, but once I got used to it, I use it all the time with no problem.

Default Thank you for your help

I would like to thank all of your for your assistance and input.
Thanks to Jan Kyster. I am now using Photoshop Elements 5.0 to Make/Edit skins.
I just need to figure out how to make a Rust Brush effect and where the Airbrush is. I do almost everything with a Airbrush. Any advice welcome...
