He is wiser than most if you ask me.

There are no agents of contentment outside your mind.

I applaud his philanthropy, but I have to agree that the elevator isn't getting to the top floor. With the worth he has, he could instead use that to make more - an thus GIVE more as he chooses - to those he feels he should. Give him 5 years and he will be complaining about how it sucks to be penniless again.

Good for him. I hope he finds happiness.

Goldenrivet, why do you think he is a jackass?

Microloans are a great way to help people.

Net worth only $4.7 million ? Is that a typo ?

My house and property on Cat Is. is worth 3 times that.

He better hang on to his loot.

If you are referring to the micro-credit charity, then yes, they are true loans; not give-aways.
The payback rate for this kind of scheme is often better than that for commercial loan companies.

It only sucks to be penniless if you don't want to be penniless.
Not wanting to be something is a product of your mind, not your circumstances.

exactly my point.

the man feels guilty because of some african hovel he saw while on a Glider trip.... give me a break and cry me a river.

As a millionaire - albeit a small millionaire - there are a lot of things he could do speaking in the philanthropic sense... but "giving away" his estate in a sort of lottery ?

EDIT:

i guess he is the worlds SECOND dumbest jackass... the first lives in Washington DC

I really don't think the purpose of his giving away the money is
philanthropic or anything to do with guilt.
Or, to put it another way, the desire to get rid of the money preceded
the idea of giving it to charity. If he could not have given his money
away; he would have burnt it.

In every culture, almost without exception, there is a strong link with
making the choice to lack wealth and well being of the spirit or mind.
The most obvious example being monks, or other holy men/women,
who chose to live in poverty that would be unacceptable in most prisons.
Typically this is done to have a stronger connection with ones god, self
and/or nature; depending on the culture.
There have also been numerous secular forms of this as well from
Diogenes of Sinope to some of the most influential academics of the last
century as well as the countless unseen hermits we never hear of.

Agree with it or not, it is important to have a good understanding of what
these people are doing and why; so universal is the phenomenon in
human culture. I think you are missing something if you do not
understand what is going on here.
