What is meant by "adding tags to a thread"?

Would someone explain what a tag is.

You can use them to search for threads. If you go to the search thingy, you can see there's a "search by tag" field. This is much better method of searching a specific thread, given that thread has tags.

Say, I make a thread about, let's say the documentary called "The Bridge", I put in a tag "Bridge" and maybe "documentary". If you'd search with the normal search for bridge, you'd end up getting craploads of threads about the either submarine's bridge or Kiel canal bridge or something like that. But if you'd use the tag search to search for a bridge, you'd find just that thread.

I hope that was as confusing as possible.

EDIT: Right, I added tag called 'tags' to this one, try first the normal search with 'tags' and see how many threads you get, then try the tag search, you should only find this one.

Thanks a lot Dowly. You made it easy to understand. No wonder I could never find what I was looking for in the past. I thought Neals search engine was messed up, but you just showed me that I was the F'ud upped one. Must be all that radioactive soup they put in me each week. Only 3 more to go.

Dont get exited yet.

It's a great system, but it needs the community to be active on it and keep adding tags to the threads, otherwise it's useless. Good thing anyone can put tags to a thread, tho.

I just hit reply which is obvious, as I am typing this. Now when you replied to my thread you added a tag which I searched with and it worked great. I see nowhere here where I can add a tag also in this reply, and only saw the option of adding a tag when I created this thread. Obviously I am missing something something. I did notice the thread no has a white magic marker showing it has been tagged. How may I add a tag in a reply as you did. I checked all the "insert" thingys but "tag" wasn,t there. If you're still around....help.........don't want anyone stealing your thunder.

EDIT: Cool. Added "hutzovina", now I know how to do it. Thanks for the info.
