Steam help

I have all my SH games through steam and have slowly been learning how vista and steam dont like me meddling with games. Ive found things not working correctly in sh3 + commander with this. Ive heard to not allow steam to auto update games. but also have heard to not install in program folder ( as I have vista) But steam installs to program folder. How can I fix my problems.

I cant confirm I have any problems with mods in either TMO or OM ( i run tmo on my lap top and om on my desktop) But judging from it screwing up sh3 Im guessing I may have problems in the other games. Does anyone know if there is a way to take a game in steam and reinstall it or copy it outside the programs folder? or do I have to uninstall steam and reinstall steam itself outside the programs folder.

Stupid computers. grumble
