Sea Dog WWII Patrol Log

I was looking for a Balao sub from WWII that I could adopt and use in SilentHunter and I came upon one I liked.. Sea Dog. I did a search and found this log of the Sea Dog's Patrols in the Pacific during WWII, quite interesting to read.

Thats pretty cool and interesting read.

Somewhere there is a website that has a whole slew of those microfilmed logs.

Maybe someone will link it for you.

One thing I'd like to do is change the name of any sub I'm using. Anyne know if that is doable and how?

Another interesting fact about the Sea Dog was that they installed a mine detection listening device onboard to facilitate their operations in the Sea of Japan.
That might make an interesting mod if anyone has a clue how to do it.

New one on me, not doubting you but I dident think that mines made any noise. Well they do make a big BOOM but by then its too late

Changing the name of the sub is possible try looking over in the modding section cause I dont know how.

There are a couple sentences on page -3- of that report I have a link to above that mentioned such a device on the Sea Dog. It's in the paragraph in the middle of the page. They came up with the device in the Spring of 45.

Maybe it picked up on vibrations in the water? Not sure. But they had something that could "hear" a mine to the front of them.

What do you think, I"ve never heard of it either.

You mean FM sonar I think, was used to detect mines late in the war.

I wonder if could be added to SH5? Could add some realism to penetrating the Sea of Japan and harbors and such.

This is what I found about f-m Sonar. Look at the bottom of page 263 to the end of the chapter, all you can possibly want to know from a techy viewpoint:

"On the west coast of the United States, scientists from the University of California based at San Diego tackled the problem of submarines detecting and avoiding submerged minefields. During 1944, they tested several experimental "breadboard" sonar models capable of doing just that on USS S-34 (SS-139) and USS Redfin (SS-272). The most successful sonar set tested was a frequency modulated (FM) sonar that produced a characteristic ringing echo from mines and similar objects, and, accordingly, that sound was described as being "Hell's Bells."

The prototype of this equipment, the QLA, was sent on patrol with USS Spadefish (SS-411) and showed so much promise that additional sets were ordered on a rush basis from the laboratory and the Western Electric Company. They were installed on the boats of the so-called Hellcat wolf pack that penetrated Tsushima Strait in June of 1945 and rampaged through the Sea of Japan. Despite the success of this exploit, submariners were understandably unenthusiastic about picking their way through minefields.

The QLA was good only at short ranges...about a quarter of a mile...and suffered from the usual limitations of sonars under less-than-perfect water conditions--and there was always the possibility of sideswiping one mine while maneuvering to avoid others. Because USS Sea Cat was a potential candidate for patrols in the Sea of Japan, Frequency Modulated QLA sonar equipment was installed in her prior to her fourth war patrol."

It would indeed be an interesting mission in SHV. The gong of "Hells Bells" when a mine was detected would be something to hear.

I would have hated to have been on one of those boats in real-life, though, although all got back but one, and it was not lost due the failure of the FM sonar.
