A few questions

Having recently come back to SH3 after a hiatus of a year or so I need a couple of questions answered.

Last time I sailed I used GWX, as a result I never did make it past the mid 1940's. A combination of destroyers being too good, me being inexperienced and too reckless. (Unfortunately due to internet usage caps in Australia I can't download GWX again for a few weeks)

Playing with Stock now I have surivived into 1941 and am wondering when the Type VIIC/41 becomes available. Until it does I'd prefer to stick with my VIIB unless there are some major advantages to the VIIC that I am not aware of.

Also is there any way to modify the game so that upon close map contacts, convoy radio reports and any surface contacts the game is automatically paused. I've been looking around and thought SHIII comander gave you the option but I can't find it. I'm quite busy at the moment so I kind of need to be able to move around and do other things whilst my sub is sailing round the Atlantic.

Also, just how often should you be finding convoys? I've recieved 2 reports of them in seperate patrols but both times have been in a crappy position to intercept.

In the Meantime loving this game once again, thanks to finally getting the hang of manual targetting (at least at 90 AOB) I sunk 50K on my last patrol for the first time ever.

The first combat patrol by a VIIC/41 took place in spring of 1944. I think stock may give it to you several months earlier.

In SH3 Commander, click the SH3 Options button, and in the list of option types select Time Compression. Then set each of "When enemy planes detected", "When enemy ships detected", and "When receive radio report" to 0 in the Max. TC column.

That is not too unusual. I have had several patrols wthout ever seeing a convoy.

Ah thanks, I thought by Max TC it meant that was the Maximum I could turn it up to. My line of reasoning was if I set it to zero it'd pause the instant I saw something and I wouldn't be able to un-pause it.

Looks like I'm going to be in the VIIB for a while yet. Why bother calling it the 41 if it didn't come into service until 44? bit ridiculous if you ask me. Oh well I like my U-46, it has served me well.

The VIIC has more available upgrades than the B.

Probably because the initial design dates from '41 and it took 3 years of engineering and testing before it entered service.

That's my guess, anyways.

The Type VIIC/41 was the German response to counter the effectiveness of British ASW progress made in 1940/41. As British ASW weapons and equipment improved, depth charges were becoming more effective and accurate at finding submerged U-boats. The necessity to dive even deeper to evade depth-charge attacks was becoming increasingly important. In the Type VIIC/41, the crush depth was increased from 200m to 250m.

In order to increase the crush depth, all non-essential equipment were removed and many others were replaced with newer, lighter material. The weight savings was used to increase hull thickness from 0.73in (18.5mm) to 0.83in (21mm), which increased the crush depth to 820ft (250m). These modifications were considered minor and did not warrant a new sub-type number, hence it was indicated by adding a suffix “41”, indicating that the modification approval was given in the year 1941
