According to Wiki the 5/25 was used as an anti-aircraft gun when it was on the Cruisers, BBs and Carriers. When it was replaced and used on subs, it was in a different mount which changed the elevation from 85 degrees to 40 degrees.
The elevation set in the .sim file is 20 degrees. Data/library/USsubParts/Deck_gun_5_25.sim in the wpn_Cannon/obj turret/Elevation

And it does have AA shells assigned to it.

...the Mark 40 mounting used on submarines was an SP type with a maximum elevation of 40 degrees.

SP is Single Purpose and not used for AA fire.

The AAA shells loaded on my Balao. Maybe yours is modded? Is there a quantity under the shell when you select it?

I just went into the gun file and it won't elevate any more, possibly because of the animations involved, I am not sure. And the elevation on the Balao says 90 degrees but it only goes the 20 set in the gun file. I haven't run into this before.

There were no AA shells available when I had the gun in careers where I went long enough to get it. I found it odd since all the cannons before it had them.

On a side note: Has anyone ever used the big cannon for AA? I've never even tried it, using either the smaller guns, or just diving away.
