On my last patrol, the first on in which I was able to equipt my boat with a 40mm Bofors single, I put that bofors to full use.
The patrol consisted of engaging merchant shipping in the Marianans, sunk 2 large tankers off of Saipan. After completing this objective, I was ordered to patrol at will in the Carolines (my game must have a bug or something since Truk is missing from the map) but instead went south to the Bismarck Sea via Tulagi to refit. On my way up the slot I took out two convoys of 3 boats. Ripped them apart with my 40mm, a few burts and they go up like a Roman Candle. Working my way intop the Bismarck Sea, I came in contact with another small convoy with the same results as before. After comming acrossed a large convoy leaving Rabaul (I took out 4 Merchies and 1 Fubuki, but in return lost my bow tubes and deck gun from DC's). On my way back to Darwin going along the north coast of New Guinea, I came across a few more small convoys all with the same results from the 40mm. My end results were 26 sampans, junks, and fishing boats SUNK!!! If you do not have the Bofors and are able to acuire one, do so. It gives plenty of fire power with no shortage of ammo (approx 300 rounds HE). Turn those junks into junk! ![]() |

Yep, 40 MM is a lot of fun.I assume you are running stock? The mods make them even more fun.
Truk is missing because the devs apparently decided to leave it out for some reason. There is a mod in the download area of subsims the will add Truk Atoll into the game, its a decent rendition. |

Agreed. Upon investigation brought on by boredom, I had my boat outfitted with 4 quad 40mm's. I set up a test mission to see how my crew would handle this new fire power. A flight of 10 Val's, 10 Kate's, and 10 Betty's. All 30 planes would hit me at the same time from different directions and altitudes. Needless to say only a few torpedoes made it to me and only one hit if I remember. I was laughing the entire time, it was great.

They are just great guns for surface battles. One of them, which I manned personally, was responsible with my deck gun for the first surface battle sinking of a warship (subchaser, I think) in any TMO career I've had. It was great. I'd pop up in range, send the AI crew to the deck gun, man the 40mm and pop away until he started to find the range, submerge, run at high speed to another vantage point, pop up...... Repeat as necessary. Sunk the sucker! Jack-in-the-box seemed to be the ticket.
Actually, it was probably unnecessarily risky, but I did it in career mode to boot, on the cruise before my epic battle with the USS Essex... Less said the better about that. ![]() That's TMO: the thrill of victory, closely followed by the agony of defeat.
