CTD (janus error) in DESTROYER COMMAND -- Mayday, Mayday!

I'm posting this again in the hopes that someone has a MUCH NEEDED fix / work-around for this issue.

I'm running 1.1 DC in XP (win 98 compat mode) -- middle of Atlantic Campaign / "Murmansk Run" mission -- I keep getting a CTD and a janus error code:

Mon Mar 4 17:50:28 2002
Error -1 [nID < 0 || nID > CONTACT_ID_MAX]
DirectX code: "Unrecognized error: 0xffffffff"

Can anyone help me out here? I thought that enabling Fletcher's excellent v10 gameplay mod in JSGME would solve this problem, but DC keeps crashing at the same place. I have tried multiple modded and un-modded clean intalls of the game / 1.1 version to no avail. And I just racked up a nice torpedo kill (CL Scharnhorst) so I REALLY DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO RESTART MY CURRENT CAREER IN THIS CAMPAIGN. Any suggestions for possible config fixes / work-arounds would be much appreciated!

Have you tried different compatibility modes or none at all? I usually play DC without any compatibility mode without problems until now (but I only have it since yesterday though...)

Are you using mods, or plain stock install?
