Stupid newbie mistake?

Bought SH3, patched and got GWX and embarked on my first mission out of Konigsberg however any time i get near base I seem to get blown out of the water by my own defenses. I know i'm missing something very basic here but would appreciate any pointers.

I've tried it a few times and have been shot up by coastal batteries on the way in but I got closest today, just outside the port, however the whole place lit up like a christmas tree and a naval artillery barge sank one of its own ships before sinking me...what am i doing wrong
