Default toggling air search radar

Sorry to open a new thread but i've searched in vain.

Someone once wrote about how to ensure the air search (SD) radar stays on when the surface search (SJ) radar is switched off. He explained what yellow-lit and greyed-out buttons on the stock toolbar meant, and how combinations of them signified whether SD or SJ was functioning.

Can anyone reiterate that info or direct me to the thread please. Thanks!

Well, depending on what difficulty you have it on (easy mode won't let you use it, and is controlled automatically I believe), you hit the button for surface or air radar. It toggles yellow indicating it is ON. You can click it again to turn it OFF. Or you can click the hand button to turn both OFF instantly.
In order to use each of these radars though, be sure you have them installed on your boat! The station remains even if you don't own those radars (which is quite silly!).

You have the air search radar from the beginning of the campaign. It is automatic, every time you surface it comes on.

The Surface Search radar has the button on the menu bar. For all the versions of SH4 before 1.4, I think, you had to turn on the surface search radar every time you surfaced (i.e. you had to push the button on the menu bar). With 1.4 & 1.5 the surface search radar comes on automatically.

It used to be when I had no surface radar (early in the career) I would pick up planes on radar before I saw them. Now that I have surface radar installed, I don't ever pick up planes on radar, I get a visual contact and often am attacked by the plane. This, of course, kind of sucks. Oh I am a noob and playing version 1.4 in "Easy" mode. Although, when I started a career on Hard I didn't see a button to turn air radar on/off either. Am I just missing it?

Any thoughts on why this is occuring? How do get air radar to turn on? Where is the button?

thanks!

There is no button for air radar. Just make sure you have it as it doesn't come with your first sub at the beginning unless you buy and install it.

Surface radar has nothing to do with air...adding surface doesn't negate air, just make sure you have it. You can use air radar at scope depth by raising it..it's the T key in TMO, can't remember stock, but probably the same.

If you get SV1 radar later war it will pick up air and surface contacts.

Ok, well if Air Radar is automatically on, then I'm afraid I don't understand.

I made sure I had air search radar from the start. During my first missions, I was regularly detecting airplanes as radar contacts. I would always have a radar contact prior to a visual airplane contact.

As soon as I installed Surface Radar on my boat, I stopped detecting airplanes completely with radar. My first contact with a airplanes is visual. This has happened repeatedly and consistently.

This is true whether I am at Easy or Very Hard difficultly. I swear my experience is true.

This is my experience with 1.4 SH4, anyone else have this experience?

Are you sure you didn't somehow unistall your air radar when you got surface radar. Go to the equipment screen and check. You probably have SD radar early war. It should show in the box and the bottom box shows what you have on boat.

It didn't get damaged did it. Often that happens.

If things aren't working, I would go back to my last entry port save and do it again.

Never heard anyone having a problem with this, not even with 1.4.

indeed i have the same problem as stoob. It's not a new problem, someone has posted the reason and fix here long ago. It's got to do with clicking the yellow icons under the radar toolbar until some are bright yellow, some are dim and some are gray. I just can't find the post explaining it.
