Default So I went and bought 10 copies of SH3..

From Newegg. I heard this was the non-Starforce version, so hopefully I didnt screw up. Gonna keep 1 and maybe another for a backup. The rest I'm slowly giving away to friends that havent played it.

(Then of course I see SH5 is coming out in 2010, ah well.)

Anyway...

I've never played it, and finally have the chance. I assume the correct course of action is install CD to non-Program Files location (using Vista 64-bit), patch latest patch, install a fantastic mod or 2 and I'm good to go?

Any mod recommendations if you're looking for the best visual/content-full experience/max realism?

edit: I'm leaning towards GWX...I'm hoping I dont have to navigate rough waters worrying about mod compatibility...

An idea. Why don't you donate a few to SubSim for contest prizes ?

Firewall has a good point! As far as mods go you definitely HAVE to go with SH3+GWX+SH3Commander+JGSME!!!!

Looks like this isnt going to be that easy -- the install process I mean.

Disc is 1.4...not 1.4b...and the patch page is confusing. I'd like to install the higher resolution fix...is that right after the patch and before Commander and GWX? Do I really need the Commander? I assume it isnt bundled with GWX...yet the jgsme one is....

edit: oh and my installer for the disc is asking if I want to install window media 9 codecs :p Says it was required, but I'm gonna take the chance and say it isnt :p

2nd edit: hmm, some patcher program called gameshadow that was part of the process appears to be broken/useless...guess I'll be deleting that.

Thanks for the welcome

I think what I've done so far is:

1. Installed DVD, ignored codecs and Direct X. DVD appeared to be 1.4, not 1.4b....the patch I found on the net failed so I assume this DVD is the latest version.

2. Installed the resolution fix.

3. Downloaded and installed Commander 3.2, then the GWX fix for it.

4. Downloaded and installed GWX 3.0

Hello Kaleun :

1 ) Install the Vanilla game with CD

2 ) Install the 1.4 Patch ( from SH3 download section )
silent_hunter_3_dvd_1.4b_emea.exe

THIS IS THE BASIC INSTALL REQUIRED TO INSTALL WHATEVER SUPERMOD COMES AFTER. If GWX,

At the Grey Wolves or at Subsim D/L

3 ) Load

For GWX :

GWX3-1.bin
GWX3-2.bin
GWX3-3.bin
GWX3-4.bin
GWX3-5.bin
GWX3-6.bin
GWX3-7.bin
The Grey Wolves Expansion 3.0 Setup
GWX3_Commander_Files.exe

If you want SH3 Commander :
SH3 Commander Setup
GWX3 files for SH3 Commander 3.2 Setup
SH3 Commander files for GWX 3.0 Setup

If you want JSGME :
JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler Setup

4 ) Run
The Grey Wolves Expansion 3.0 Setup
GWX3_Commander_Files.exe

SH3 Commander and JSGME are optionnal but highly recommended.

Gute Jagd Kaleun

P.S. : If you fire your torpedoes like you get your Copies of SH3, you should get pretty profficient...

Just speaking from experience... Install SH3 and patch, THEN install GWX. I found that GWX overwirtes so many of the original files that installing any MOD prior to GWX is a waste of time. After that... install SH3Commander and then your resolution fix... and anything else that suits you. Highly recommend using JSGME for you MOD loading/unloading so as you don't mess anything up.

btw - I might suggest PT Thompsens Sound MOD... and get a few skins too while you're at it! Good luck and welcome!

I think I'm gonna have to do a clean uninstall/reinstall and ignore Commander and also ignore JSGME....it doesnt explain clearly what each of the 18 gmx mods it offers actually do...and you cant enable them all because some of them clearly clash with each other (at least according to the error messages).

I cant use that 1.4b patch. Here's the message I get for silent_hunter_3_download_1.4b_emea from

http://patches.ubi.com/silent_hunter_3/

This program cannot update the installed version of Silent Hunter III EMEA download v1.0 to 1.3 because of the following reason: (basically one of the stuka cfg files was an unknown version)

Now you might say it's because I installed GWX...but I was getting this error right after I installed the Encore DVD that I bought from Newegg

edit: oops, guess I might have done the wrong one, but I still get the error with the DVD patch as well. I'm gonna have to do a clean uninstall/reinstall here and report back.

final edit on this post: I seriously doubt I can use those patches because it says "1.0 to 1.3". My disc comes with 1.4. It just doesnt come with 1.4B! Kinda frustrating. Does 1.4 on this disc equal 1.4B??

Anyway, will try again with the clean install.

Ok, I just did a sweep of the vista registry...hopefully nothing vital :p Haha.

After this defrag finishes, I'm gonna do DVD, attempt patch, then if it fails, try GWX 3.0 and that's it. Maybe the resolution fix afterwards.

DVD installed. DX, codecs, Gameshadow ignored. GS on the disc is outdated anyway I read. Found an interesting thread. Apparently if you have 1.4.0.1, you already have 1.4b...why dont they just put 1.4b in the title screen of SH3 though? My file properties are: 1.26 MB (1,331,200 bytes) and 1.4.0.1

Looking ok so far.

Your earlier problems were as a result of trying to install over a copy of SH3 that already contained additional files.

Rule no 1 for GWX3.0..........Install only on a fresh install of SH3 patched to 1.4b.

There are installation instructions contained within the GWX website (click on my sig).

Welcome aboard

My current install is 1) DVD without all the garbage, and then 2) GWX 3.0 installed immediately afterwards -- and I have not tried running the JSGME program that GWX installed. I also have not tried running the resolution fix yet either, despite having to view jaggies on this 28 inch monitor. I have not installed or used Commander.

I cannot patch the game. It fails even on a clean disc install. It's already at 1.4b I believe from the disc.

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/t...2/m/7261080164

My exe file version matches the picture in the above thread -- 1.4.0.1 -- however my file size is larger...it's a 1300k exe, not 968k

Does the game put a SH3 folder in Documents? Because I installed the disc to a folder called SHTHREE...but there's also a SH3 folder there.

GWX seems to run fine. I just wish I had some way of verifying that it's actually running the way it should be.
